ABOUT “FATHER PAT,” What a Correspondent of the Minneap- olis Times Says of the Preacher. From the Minneapolis Times the fol- is taken: One thing all newcomers remark in the towns in the Kootenays is the pres- ence of churches, and it isan index of the character of the people that close touch confirms, Here in Rossland there ave Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic and Episcopal congregations and church buildings; in Trail, Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, and Catholic, an even in the newer camps religious eer vices are held regularly by the migsion- aries, who traverse the traiis on foot to keep t their appointments. here is one man in British Colum- bia whom every miner, prospector and pioneer knows by his. cognomen of “Father Pat.” He is not an Irishman nor is he a priest of Rome, bit when the Canadian Pacific railway was pushin; its tortuous way across the Selkirl range, the Rev. Mr. Irwin, just gradu- ate dirom the Oxford university and or- dained in England in tho Epinopa church, came out as a missionary. He did not hang back among civilize com: munities, but in the front rank, among Jawless men he worked and preached. No man was injured, not one lonely chap faraway from home was ill in some rude shack or ruder occupied bunkhouse, but Father Pat was there to nurse and care for him, even to cook for him and carry not alone the gospel, but those little attentions the sick crave and appreciate. From Calgary on the prairies up through Donald, Revelstoke to Kam- loops, down through the Slocan, and in every mining camp, men of all rank and stations, all creeds and religions, have naught but good to say of this noble man, whose influence for good in British Columbia can never be estimated and many a fellow who has tried to impose on the pioneer preacher has been taught a trick in wrestling or boxing, when the earnest preacher has resorted temporarily to carnel arguments aud his soon-to-be convert has found himeelf sprawling in the dirt and the laughing face of Father Pat looking at him in quiet enjoyment for his discomtiture. In mary years experience on the fron- tise Lhave yet to meet a man of whom very one has 8+ much good to say and ouainet whom none can say ill. ——— FIRE IN SAN FRANCISCO. Mem- bers jumped to thir feet, with angry re- torts .,-cinging from their lips, and fitful flashes of eloquence burst forth, but it proved unavailing. Throughout it all the mayor smiled pleasantly and held steadily to his course. The meeting was lively in more ways than one. Every question brought up seemed to provoke a storm of opposition. A motion to rescind the order locating the vity hall on Washington and Second streete was lost; at the request of the trade’s unions the sixteenth of July was declared a half holiday: Long's sewor- age plans were adopted; the beard of works were empowered to tear down the Jubilee arches, and a spirited debate took place about placing on another scavanger. After di routine b A VERY LIVELY SESSION te Washington Street Site Selected b “Do I understand that we have no solicitor?” asked Fraser, but before the mayor could reply Raymer jumped to his feet and exclaimed: ‘I am at a loss to find words to express my great sur- prise.
