Place, behind the Big O Tire Store on Columbia Ave The lane is scheduled to be pur chased by the owner of the Big O Tire building, for use as a private driveway leading to a still-unbuilt, 6-unit multi-family housing com- plex. The new residential develop- ment will be built on the site behind the automotive business. City adminéstrator Jim Gustafson said the developer, Edwin Jones of Tri-River Hold- ings Lid., was unable to meet the city’s original requirements for access to the site of the new hous- ing complex. He said the lane leading to the property is presently too narrow and poorly kept-up to be considered & true road, "so we said no to making that the access road into the development.” To get around this difficulty, Gustafson said the city proposed that Jones buy the laneway at fair market value, and convert it into 4 private driveway for the exclu- Sive use of future residents of the planned housing development, “The requirements change a lot from road to driveway. Although all concerned proper- ty owners have approved the change, the owner of the Big O Tire store, Larry Chermnenkoff, says he isn’t too keen gn the change. “I'm not impressed. It would be a real pain,” Although Chernenkoff said he has not been formally contacted by the city for his opinion on the matter, he said he would be per. fectly willing to purchase the property himself, if it meant keeping his business from being inconvenienced. “I'm just looking out for myself here. But selling it is a pretty ridiculous thing to do,” he said. “A 20-foot piece of proper- ty going through two other pieces of property just doesn't make any sense.” “I could see some conflict coming out of this.” Castlegar city council, appar- ently heeding the concerns of Chernenkoff and other irritated locals, opted to postpone granting rézoning approval for the lane at its Aug. 15 meeting “Mr. Jones [of Tri-River Hold- ings) apparently has no problem meeting with tenants regarding his Proposed purchase,” said Mayor Mike O’Connor at the meeting Still, Chernenkoff said he remains apprehensive about the future of the asphalt strip backing on to his Big O Tire outlet “I'm just concerned about get- ting in my back door — that’s all.” We weld anything... It’s after February, however, that donations decrease and per- sonnel are forced to buy food to supplement the hampers. “We're always looking for donations,” said Carbert Items always in demand for the hampers include peanut but- ter, pasta and pasta sauce, soup, macaroni and cheese, rice, tuna, pork and beans. juice, canned fruit and vegetables, and canned meat.
