CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, April 7; 1971 Aside Church at Radium Hot Sprin New Model “Way of the Cross” Shrine For years, a small brown and blue Roman Catholic church has stood near the main highway junction at Radium Hot Springs. Now, visitors who stop for a moment's peace will find a new addition: the begin- nings of the “Way of the Cross" shrine. It's the result of a remark- able community effort that has involved LIP grants, local dona- tions, the energy of the local Chamber of Commerce, and, B.C. Motorist May Belt Up By August B.C. motorists may have to buckle up by August, according to Transport Minister Jack Davis, Speaking during debate on a bill to make the wearing of seat belts mandatory, Davis said the government is aiming for an August start, adding that the law will go into effect no later than October. The legislation, an amend- ment to the Motor Vehicle Act, received approval in principle weeks ago with only Len Baw- tree (SC—Sh voting most important, the determina- tion of a Radium businessman, It began with George Stan: ley, a longtime Radium resident who built and ran Radium's first hotel. He donated the land for the church: he had a life-long dream that a shrine representing the 14 stations of the cross would one day stand beside the church, He started the project by giving land for the shrine, on a steep hillside that rises behind the Our Lady Queen of Peace church. He also donated land forsale, with proceeds going. toward construction of the shrine. Local volunteers. set to work, clearing the land and laying out switchback trails that risé up the hill, then cut back down again. A Calgary architect donated a scale model of the setting and the shrine. Then Radium sculptor Bud Amy set to work on the first of the life-size figures for the shrine. To avoid problems with vandalism, he chose to work in fibreglass, stained to wood tones, and to create figures ina traditional design. To date, three. of the stations are complete: Jesus is against it. The bill requires that al- most all people riding in an automobile wear a lap belt. It excludes children under six and those who can't wear belts for medical reasons. Bawtree said later that he opposed the legislation per: sonally and has had a negative response to it from the con- stituents, Davis said Ontario's ex- perience with seat belt laws indicates that $12.3 million will be saved in B.C. each year in hospital and medical costs. He said 3,000 fewer people will be injured on B.C. highways each year and 43,600 hospital bed- days can be saved. d to die; Jesus meets his sorrowful ‘mother; and Jesus is raised upon the cross and dies, The visitor to the shrine now can walk the paths that lead up the hill to a magnificent view of the Columbia Valley to the east and the beginning of Kootenay National Park to the west, To reach the shrine—pro- + bably the only one of its scale in Western Canada—turn west on Highway 93 at Radium Hot Springs; the church and the Queen of Peace Shrine are close to the highway junction. The present Slocan Com- munity hospital in New Denver was built in 1898, and is con- sidered totally inadequate by modern standards. While it has 23 beds, more than enough, it does not have some basic life- saving equipment, nor other essentials such as an elevator. There are. about 1,000 people in New Denver and dis- trict. A diagnostic centre would have been a “glorified doctor's office” according to Martin Vanderpol. He is head of the hospital advisory committee which last week recommended the building of a new hospital. One of the major fears as- sociated with the centre was that a doctor would’ not be willing to work at one. That could mean the area would lose its only resident doctor. While centralizing expert hospital treatment makes sense medically, transportation in the Slocan is not excellent, Van- Victoria, B.C., V8V 1X4, phone 387-6748.
