.16A CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, April 14, 1977 According to Soemnet Pamphlet Smoking Costs “Cigarette smoking is cost- ing the taxpayers of British Columbia millions of dollars a year in medical services, hosp!- tal care, property loss and forest fires... but most critical of all... it kills.” That is the lead statement in a new Ministry of Health pamphlet titled “Cigarettes And Your Health", recently introduced by Health Minister Bob McClelland, The pamphlet says that your chances of dying from * heart disease, Canada's number one health problem which ac- counts for 80,000 deaths each year, are nine times greater if you smoke. The chances of dying from lung cancer aro eight times greater, and your chances of dying from emphy- sema are five times greater. “The Ministry of Health’ pamphlet serves a two-fold Millions Yearly purpose,” McClelland said. “It encourages smokers to give up smoking, and it helps them kick the habit with suggestions for diet and exercise during the most difficult period of cigar- ette withdrawal, the first seven \ days.” The health minister said that some of the health hazards described in the pamphlet are common knowledge, but it also outlines many dangerous ‘as: “pects of smoking Y have received little public recogni. tion. “There is also evidence,” the minister said, “that the chemical carcinogens in cigar- ette smoke can enter the fetal bloodstream if the mother smokes during pregnancy. Cancer is the fourth leading cause of death between the. - ages of 1 and 14, and a number of cancers are present at birth.” ‘The hlet is available Gas Model Planes | Beconte a Pilot!
