One might think that col- lecting examples of obscene gestures would be as easy as _ finding a massage parlor in Times Square. But for British zoologist Desmond Morris, author of The Naked Ape, collecting obscene gestures posed frequent and difficult problems in his latest book, Manwatching, an encyclo- pedia of body language. “Stop! Stop!" shouted a friend as Morris inquired about and began to perform in public a gesture that might have landed him in jail on the island of Malta, “And in Tunisia we had terrible trouble because my research assistant was a wo- man, and male subjects would not perform a certain gesture in front of females,”. Morris said recalling the field work for his guide to human behavior. “Actually, many of the gestures were performed jok- ingly at my photographer and it was difficult to find a genuine insult. That’s why we used so many drawings.” And as Morris explains, to a careful observer, the differ- ence is quite apparent, because facial expressions often do not’ match gestures. And the con- tradictions between words and actions or between the actions themselves are illuminating. The obscene signal, stud- ied in many countries, is one of many topics of the profusely illustrated volume. In thousands of ways, by’ his gestures and expressions, says Morris, the human animal gives himself away. Whatever his intellectual attainments, he is still a creature of biology _ and constantly and eloquently expresses himself. with his ody. To a good reader of his actions, man is an open and fascinating book. Man-watching discusses non-verbal clues with which a person may betray himself. ‘ “I get.very cross when people suggest exploitation or reduce body, language to a party game,” Morris said. “One doesn’t watch birds in order to destroy them, and it is the same with human beings. It is possible that by reading our fellow man better, we may gain an increased tolerance of his problems.” t/ | etane ign, HOSTESS may not have the world ona string, but she knows your community - inside out. The Bolshoi Ballet is as intriguing as pro wrestling.” , : People often say to Morris, the premier man-watcher, “Oh, I-must watch what I do.” But because gestures are so natur- al, people forget themselves and within seconds they are gesticulating away. And Morris is like every- one else, giving himself away with his ‘gestures. 3 “Sometimes I see myself on television, and I'm very calm and collected up top,” he says, “But when the camera shows- my feet, they are wound around the leg of the cliair and crying out for help.” No Charges In Sunday's Accident No injuries have resulted in an accident Sunday causing an estimated $1,200 damage to the two vehicles involved, Damage has been esti- mated at $500 to a 1972 Buick driven by Dwayne Rizotti of.
