Chancellor, Reasoner,”” the 48- year-old told me, “But older than other women in my field. And it’s hard for a woman to stay in front of the cameras when she's in her late 50's or 60's. This is going to create anger, but it does make a diflerence being a woman. People want to accept Walter Cronkite as ‘Uncle Walter.’ But | don’t know if they'd want to see ‘Aunt Barbara.’ And 1! certainly don't want it for myself... Robert Culp jetted from L.A. to N.Y. in a last ditch attempt to reconcile with wife Sheila. When the bid bombed, he flew right back to the arms of girlfriend Carol Connors... Teen idols Willie Aames and Scott Baio of ‘Eight is Enough’ and ‘Happy Days’ are extremely jealous of each other. They refused to co-host the syndicated disco show ‘Hollywood Teen’ and also retused to pose in. the same photo for a fan maggie... Barbara Bach is walking a real tight rope. It's a good thing she flunked her ‘Charlie's Angels’ screen test by looking too sophisticated beside Chery! Ladd and Jaclyn Smith. (f she was an ‘Angel’ she wouldn't have been able to escape to Italy, to make the movie ‘Cavman.’ This means she doesn't have to decide between her live-in roommate producer Dan Risner and her latest escort. agent Michael Black until she gets back to Hollywood in September... James Garner says he wants out of his NBC-TV hit ‘The Rockford Files’ because the show is ruining his health. “I've had six operations on my knees in the past five years," Garner, 50. told me. “I limp through each episode. I'm tired and | want to stop. ‘Universal Studios doesn’t know the amount of pain that’s involved. “There is one way they could check though. They could go and see how many pain killers I've had to take at the first aid center.” Garner, who says the pain keeps him awake at night, explained that ‘Rockford’ began taking it's physical toll as early as the show's : JOHNNY CARSON JACLYN SMITH +++ $5 million . an ange! INSIDE LOOK AT TV: At last count, 14 TV performers are making a mind-boggling million dollars or more a year. NBC-TV's ‘Tonight Show’ host Johnny Carson leads the field with an annual fee of $5 million—at least that's what CBS-TV's ‘60 Minutes’ interviewer Mike Wallace believes. TV industry insiders can point to many other stars who. for just 23 episodes a year, earn extravagant sums. Following Carson in the big. mone: peme are CBS's ‘All In The Family’ stars, Carroll "Connor and Jean Stapleton. Best estimates place O'Connor's salary at about $3 million a year. As the dingbat Edith, Ms. Stapleton reputedly takes home about $2 million. FOCUS ON THE STARS: Tony Danza of ‘Taxi’ was seated in the audience of another show when some young girls in the audience spotted him. They created a scene untif’...” a CBS exec told them: "Either you or Tony Danza will have to leave—it you don't settle down.”’ They did and shooting resumed... The next time you watch ‘Mork & Mindy’ you might wonder where Robin Williams gets all his funny lines. We know several comics who don't think he's funny at all. They say Robin's stealing their material. Of course. they won't come right out and accuse him. “It's a fact of life you can't afford to complain,” D.F. Swedler told me. Swedler’s the one who performs at “Catch A Rising Star’ in Manhattan. And club owner, Rick Newman told me: “It’s nothing concrete. It happens all the time in this business.” . . . It's called the Type A Behavior Pattern, commonly known as the “deadline di- sease," and it could very well be the key factor that triggers heart attacks as early as age 40. “It's a frightening and often obsessive sense of time urgency, of time passing him by too fast,” says a heart expert at the University of Southern California. A person with the “dead- line disease” is determined to accomplish too much in too little time. He's alert, intense, sometimes hostile, and is com- petitive and ambitious. He's usually in an occupa- tion with regular deadlines and just hates to wait in line at the bank, movie or restaurant. He is also forever looking at his watch. “The individual possessed with the deadline disease has typically played on school teams, takes courses to further himself, looks for advancements above his present position and will participate in different community activities,” says one expert. And since these patients never give in or quit, they rarely ask for mental help. Such a lifestyle is driving many North Americans to an early grave. It causes blood cholesterol to rise, which re- sults in hardening of the arteries and heart disease. “Ts it any wonder that the deadline disease is associated with three to four times greater predisposition to heart at- tacks?” asks one expert. The disease is very diffi- cult to treat. The patient must modify his sense of time ur- gency, excessive drive and ambition. He must re-allocate his time and energies. This is not so easy to do, doctors say. Do you have the deadline disease? Test yourself: Are there many deadlines in your work? Do you enjoy them? ” Are you always on time for business and social appoint- ments? Do you often become an- noyed when you see something being done slower than you think it should be done? Do you often have the feeling that time is passing too quickly to accomplish your goals? Because of your time ur- gency, do you look at your watch often? Do you remember from younger years always striving for advancement? Do you still strive for advancement? Is there much competition in your work? Do you prefer and even enjoy it? If you've answered yes to most of these questions, then you may be pushing yourself a bit too hard. If you're worried you may be inviting heart trouble, there are several steps you can follow, experts Say s s one: “The patient should cultivate friends who have a behavior pattern that impels one to give of his time and attention without any material reward. Stop thinking about more than one thing at a time and don’t accept hurry as a neces- sary part of life. Put first things first and let others go, because you don't do everything or be everything. ___ We must We're m to a 35 OC J Sq.
