When the opportunity arose to purchase the building (an old church) next to the existing services (Hobbit Hill), the society chose to undertake an expansion of its services. This was rather frightening due to the society being a non-profit organization and committed to being fiscally responsible businesses participated in events such as “A Night Out for the Kids” — an auction at the Hi Arrow and “Doing Time for Charity” was a great success. The Variety Club of B.C. matched $10,000 raised during a telethon, Ronald McDonald Children’s Charities donated $20,000 for accessibility costs, the B.C. Lotteries granted $54,700 and The Vancouver Foundation and Weston Foundation also were major contributors. Thus began a fundraising campaign by executive director, Katrine Conroy. In February 1991, the Variety Club gave $109,000. Of that, $68,000 went to purchase the building and the rest was to be used for equipment. The Selkirk Lions donated all the interior and exterior doors, a mural to be done by Richard Widdifield and their time and labor. The Kiwanis of Castlegar contributed all the paint for the building and their time and effort in painting it. The community and _ local donations were coming in steadily.. The society even received the contents of one piggy bank owned by Ryan Popoff. All contributors will be acknowledged and many plaques will be erected in the foyer of the new building in appreciation. During this time the society invited public participation in helping to name the new building and under-three day care. The name Tender Care Variety Centre was selected for the new building, while the Tender Care Infant Program would be the name under-three day care programs. Nelson Joy Stewart selected the names and, in place of a dinner for two, chose to have a plaque erected in her name. The society was pleasantly surprised to receive a donation of siding for the entire new building from Alcan Building Products in Kelowna and local volunteers and laborers of the Employment Plus Program who helped install it. With your help we have raised over $350,000. The final project will come in at approximately budget is $647,000 and we employ 25 staff. As you can see, we are not just a day care but an impressive-sized business. The Kootenay Columbia Child Care Society would like to express a sincere and heartfelt thank you to all who took part. in its expansion project, from volunteers who kindly gave of their time and to donors, from Ryan Popoff’s $26.77 to the Variety Club’s $106,000 we couldn’t have accomplished the Tender Care Variety Centre without we @ Wednesday, December 2, 1992 198 ‘Drop-In’ a success A very enjoyable time was ° had by all at first Seniors “Drop-In” day at the Castlegar Seniors Hall on Nov. 17.
