DIANNE KUNZ City Clerk @ Wednesday, December 16, 1992 198 The Ministry of Health and Ministry Responsible for Se- niors, Alcohol and Drug Pro- grams and Selkirk College hosted a five-day course on youth and drugs during the week of Nov. 16 to 20. This course was developed by the Addiction Research oelkirk offers drug training Foundation with the support of Health and Welfare Canada. The focus is to identify and re- spond to the needs of so-called “early stage” drug users. The CBC TV maligning goal is to train and motivate professionals in non-specialist fields, who already possess skills in youth counselling and related areas. This latest course attracted 13 participants from Grand Forks, Castlegar, Rock Creek, Trail and Nelson whose work brings them into contact with youth. With this broad base of informed professionals and para-professionals, the com- munities are better positioned to address the issue of sub- stance abuse by youth. For information contact the Castlegar and District Com- munity Services at 365-2104. BUSINESS DIRECTORY Copy Deadline for January — 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23 ¢ 365-7266 continued from page 7 : Under false pretenses, the authorities arrested the parents and took away the children claiming, “Long Planned Trap Sprung By The Doukhobors. .. by parading in the nude on a public highway and around a school, to protest the educating of their children.” (Vancouver Sun, Sept. 12, 1953.) As one of the participants in the tent village, I know this was a deliberate, deceitful lie, for no one left the boundaries of the tent village despite a vicious attack on defenseless people by a score of RCMP officers. Under the command of Sgt. MacKay, the RCMP raided the tent village with riding crops and half inch hoses about three feet long, swatting everyone in sight and terrifying screaming children who dashed away to hide wherever they could. The police also beat and dragged away two people, elderly Bill Chernoff and Bill Lawrenoff, which later proved to be the purpose of the raid. By dragging away the two men, it was expected that the people would be instigated to march in protest out onto the highway. But, no one moved outside the fence. The lie was published superar: not in the local papers, but in the Vancouver un. Now that everything is good and quiet for the CBC, they have apparently decided to scratch the cancerous wound by claiming that passing food over the fence to their children was only because “it made better news pictures, but the parents were allowed inside all the time.” This is another deliberate lie. Parents were not allowed inside their children’s prison. For years, all the visiting that families were allowed was through the high metal fence, one afternoon every second weekend. Mothers who were reluctant to leave their children, or who protested, were dispersed by RCMP armed with their hoses. The Sons of Freedom have a long story to tell; but not to the CBC. Mike E.
