Bs Castlégar News April 22, 1987 NEW FACILITY TO INVESTIGATE AGING PROCESS By JUDY CREIGHTON Canadian Press Probing the mysteries of aging has not been a priority in Canadian medical circles. Most of the delving has been carried on in universities with research into specific areas of the aging process, such as Alzheimer’s disease and the sociological impact of growing old. But as the population of Canada ages and medical science prolongs life and well-being, the need for comprehensive study into growing old has beeome priority. In fact, a multi-million-dollar priority. To this end, Toronto's Sunnybrook Medical Centre is about to be transformed into a Centre for Studies in Aging. “We want to be known throughout the medical and academic world for our research into aging.” says Dr. Murray Fisher, Sunnybrook’s vice-president of research who is piloting the project. *WORLD-CLASS' “We want to develop a world-class facility, a centre of excellence for the study of the process.” Fisher conceded in an interview that such study is overdue, saying: “There should have been programs of this proportion and scope yeats ago.” It’s estimated that the number of Canadians over 65 will almost double in the next 15 years, rising to 20 per cent of the population from 11 per cent, he said. LONDON (AP) — For men, it’s not how much you weigh but how the fat is dis- tributed that seems to in- crease the risk of heart dis- disease, along with smoking, high . blood pressure and cholesterol. ease,a U.S. study suge' and a pot belly could be a sign of trouble. “The more fat you have in the upper part of your body, the higher the risk of heart disease, regardless of overall body weight,” said Dr. Rich- ard Donahue of the National Heart, Lung and Blood In- stitute in Bethseda, Md. His research was published in a recent issue of The Lan- cet, a British medical journal. Although the study focus- ed on the accumulation of fat in the upper body, Donahue said in an interview that heavy-chested men also tend to have pot bellies. “There- fore they're probably at an increased risk of heart dis- ease as well.” But pr h bas- ically has not discriminated between body fat and weight due to muscles and bones. SOUGHT ANSWER Donahue, an epidemiolo- gist, and his colleagues at- tempted to determine whe- ther body fat alone increased the risk of heart disease. He said they examined data’ gathered .in followup studies over 12 years among 7,692 men who took part in the Honolulu Heart Program, which was set up in 1965 to study heart disease. All the men were free of heart trouble when they entered the program. To estimate the impor- tance of body fat as an inde- pendent risk factor in heart disease, the researchers studied the incidence of the disease among overweight, normal weight and lean men. The researcher said the findings could be significant in identifying likely candi- dates for heart disease . Answer to Sunday Crossword Puzzle No. 256 | CHEEP! COMPUTERIZED ‘WATER ANALYSIS SYSTEM IC EN Sunnybrook appears to be the ideal setting for such a Biri centre. For years it has been the main medical facility ‘ For all your pool maintenance needs, call the experts! We install ‘and more. We also carry a BASS RUSSELL tin/20 dealing with war veterans, as well as doing basic research into chronic and degenerative diseases associated with aging. ‘And although the new centre is in its infancy, Fisher envisages a program that will include research into improving health care in chronic-care facilities and improving living environments to compensate for the fraility of old age. RANGE OF ISSUES “It's not going to be just clinical phenomena we're looking at, but emotional issues, economic and social issues as well,” he says. “We want to try to define better ways to help people cope with life.” Toward a better environment for the elderly, the centre will study designs for floors, stairways, beds and chairs, and ways to reduce falling, he says. A behavioral research unit will look into the decline of intellectual capacity that often accompanies aging. A social science unit will develop programs dealing with cultural, social and ethnic aspects of aging. “The elderly, especially those from different cultural backgrounds, often have an exceptionally difficult time adjusting to new environments,” Fisher explains. “A move can bring on a real culture shock and we'd like to explore ways of lessening this.” BIOLOGY COUNTS There will be a biology department studying shifts in the body's defence mechanisms, and a clinical investigation unit to study degenerative diseases. Fisher hopes the centre, to operate in association with the University of Toronto school of medicine, will “become « national source of information as well as a first-class research facility which will attract young scholars from all around the world.” At present, Fisher is vague about financial support for the centre, which in the beginning will be located on the top floor of a wing at Sunnybrook. The centre has no federal or provincial funding, and Fisher hopes money will come from private and corporate sources. Cardiac team passes milestone LONDON, ONT. Alcohol, skiing don't mix GUELPH Ont. (CP} — Most people have accepted the idea that alcohol and getting behind the wheel of a car don't mix, but many still cling to the notion that booze will keep them warm on the snowmobile or ski trail, says a human biology professor. Terry Graham of the Uni versity of Guelph warns that the early signs of hypother- mia — a condition of subnor- mal body temperatures — are often mistaken for symptoms of inebriation. Light-headedness and the inability to think clearly are indications of cold stress, says Graham. “If you see these signs in someone, it's time to turn around and head for the car or the ski chalet.” =) 3a ~ vow 809 Merry Creek Road Past Fireside Motel Sunday School 10:00 a.m. Morning Worship 11:00.a.m. Evening Service 6:30 p.m TUES. 6:00 P.M. The Government of British Columbia is seriously considering selling Government Liquor Stores to private business and allowing beer and wine in grocery stores. British Columbians should take a hard look at the price they will have to pay for liquor privatization before any final decisions are made. This year, B.C. will spend an extra 2 billion dollars for more police, more health problems, and more time off work. We already have the worst record in Canada for the numbers of teenagers who regularly drink alcohol. Greater access to alcohol will mean more costs for the ordinary tax payer of B.C. Public hearings have begun on liquor policy and privatization in most major communities throughout the province. The government is hearing submissions from the general public on greater access to alcohol through corner stores and super markets. There is an alternative to making beer and wine available in corner stores that is safer and means fewer problems and lower costs for everyone . The government should expand hours of operation at exist- ing stores and make them more flexible. The 6:00 pm closing, five nights a week in most stores, is outdated The government should make in-store improvements to service and convenience. This includes cold beer, beer only express lines and better displays: The government should open more specialty stores through- out the province. r { . The government should\undertake an indepth study of customer needs, in orden make further improvements in service. Po B.C. can’t afford the cost of liquor privatization. The dis- advantages of privatization substantially outweigh any potential benefits, Privatization would reduce the ability of the govern: ment to control access to alcoholic beverages at the same time as it reduces revenue from the sale of these beverages Thereis another Tey way! cm) AUCTION HOUSE New & Used Furniture for Sale Phone 399-4793 WOGODCRAFT solid stain, $25; colour chamois. 365-3: Lose Weight & FEEL GREAT! the Nutritious Way cat 365-3169 NINA'S Personalized Hair Care TEREKOFF Formerly of New York Society 1783 Howry. 3A Thome Call 399-4348 Appointments Anytime ONE PAIR Captain seats, brown; swivel/recline, Good shape, i 3/30 “Have Song, — Will Travel"’ (For Fun Parties Only) DICK WAYLING Ph. 365-5964 Mutual Investco Nii Mutual Life of Canada HOMEMADE Beer and Wine Sup- plies.
