ENTERTAINMENT James says he enjoys job By DONNA ZUBER Staff Writer Shuffling from city. te city, hotel to hotel, boarding buses at 4 a.m. and. racing to HH planes are all part of the exhausting lifestyle of Canadian musician Colin James. “But it’s still one of the better jobs to have,’ James told the Castlegar News in an interview Tuesday. ‘I enjoy it, but it’s definitely a job,"’ he said, adding a dose of reality to many people’s fan- tasies of life as a rock star. James will perform in Castlegar on Nov. 22 in his first of three concerts in B.C. before heading to Europe for a month-long tour, He is promoting his new album, Sudden Stop, and has already been on tour through the United States for the past five months. And with Europe next, and a Canadian tour planned for the spring, things won't slow down for some time. **You've got to go when the iron's hot,"’ James said. ‘‘We're released in European countries and you've g to go if you're going to release an album, never mind the places like Australia and New Zealand where you'd like to get to."" As for continuing to perform in small towns when he’s in such hot demand in larger centres, James said simply, ‘‘People are people, places are_places,"’ and he’s happy to play them all, He added that small towns provide a good warmup for larger tours, but there are very few differences bet- ween playing for an audience of 1,000 and an audience of 75,000. **We don’t do a lot of gimmicks or tricks, we just come out and play,’ he said. His European tour, starting in Germany with live performances and television shows, includes, a blues festival in France and ends with eight “COLIN JAMES . . in concert Nov. 22 shows with former Led Zeppelin vocalist Robert Plant in London. James is scheduled to appear on the David Letterman show Dec. 21 after he gets back. Aside from touring to promote Sudden Stop, James produced a video’ for the single, Just Came Back. He said he had creative con- trol over the video and ‘put a lot in- to it.” “It can be a great experience or a - horrible experience,"’ he said about making music videos, ‘but generally I like them. They're usually so rushed it’s hard to put the time you'd like into them."” The Just Came Back video was shot in one day in Los Angeles. It has now started to climb the American charts and is now at No. 21, he said. For Castlegar residents, James has a simple message: ‘‘Come on out and enjoy the show.”” Dream became film, writer says LOS ANGELES (AP) Screen- writer Bruce Joel Rubin recently talked about how to turn nighttime dreams into fun and profit “Jacob's Ladder came to me as a dream,"’ he said. ‘‘It started with me Escape, to fantasy rooms AT COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO Only 3 hours away to Bennett Bay on — d'Alene Lake and |-90 from $70 from $30 CANADIAN ATPAR 1-800-368-8609 WOW SHOWING! _ vartuEW MODINE ERIC STOLTZ | | f las) SATURDAY and SUNDAY! I felt | would have to go to hell to become free, to get out." That’s the start of Tim Robbins’s descent into a personal hell in Jacob's Ladder. It’s a thriller written by Rubin, a hot screenwriter because of Ghost, and directed by Adrian Lyne, also hot because of Fatal Attr- action. Robbins is a Vietnam veteran beset with dreams and hallucinations. He learns that his combat buddies have undergone the same. bedevilment, and he tries to discover the reason Two years have passed since Lyne’s sensation-ridden Fatal Attrac- tion. Why the gap? The director said that Jacob’s Ladder started at Paramount Pictures, but fell from favor after a change in regimes. The project shifted to Columbia Pictures. “Also, I worked for a year on the special effects aspects of the movie,"’ he added. ‘‘One problem that took a long while was that we did all the special effects in-camera, when we shot, rather than handing over the special effects as a kind of package to a company like ILM (Industrial Light and Magic). “IT was anxious to do it that way because I think that sometimes movies with special effects get into a kind of sameness, because the same guy is doing the special effects for all of them.”’ Robbins, known for his off-centre comedy in such movies as Bull Durham and Cadillac Man, was a surprise casting as the bedeviled veteran. “He obviously wasn’t an obvious choice in commercial terms,’’ Lyne admitted. ‘‘The studio would have been happy with a Mel Gibson or a Harrison Ford, who bring an audien- ce to a movie. I liked Tim. I think he’s a very vulnerable, sympathetic man, for a start, and I loved him in Bull Durham CABLE 10 SHAW CABLE 10 SCHEDULE Nov. 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 1990 5 p.m. (Wed) 9 a.m. (Fri) 5 p.m. (Sun) West Kootenay Today — Eleanor Elstone hosts this weekly program that looks at the weekly Shaw Cable schedule.
