As the new year phases in _and 1991 passes into oblivion, we are reminded of the contin- ual evolution of life. New is al- ways replacing the old. We cannot ignore our past, however. The world we live in today is a product of past deci- sions and actions. Similarly, the world we will live in tomor- row will be a product of today’s decisions and actions. These decisions and actions may af- fect each of us personally — depending on how long we live. If not us, certainly our children . and grandchildren will be af- fected. The garbage we make today will not magically disappear in the future. It will be there to haunt us, or future genera- tions, unless we take appropri- ate preventive action: During the past year many “made no effort to reduce the amount of garbage they pro- duce. The excuse is that there is no recycle depot in town. Recycling and You While its true we don’t havea depot or a formal collection sys- tem, there are still many op- tions available for anyone who'd care to make the world a better place in the future. There dre depots in Nelson’ and Rossland which accept a wide range of paper, glass and scrap metal items. There are Excuses not good enough wintertime. Virtually all of can be more selective abot buying overpackaged item and could reduce waste by p chasing items which could ~ reused over and over again. | There are several lo thrift shops and second ha stores willing to accept goo used clothing and househo items. If you don’t feel li giving these things awa have a garage sale. Early in the new year tk Regional District of Centré Kootenay is planning mailing recycle directories € all local residents and busi options available locally fo! anyone wishing to reduce thi amount of garbage going to our community landfill. several local outlets for used . oil. Tires and batteries left ata designated area at the Ootis- chenia landfill will be picked up and reprocessed. Most householders could easily start a compost heap for fruit and vegetable scraps — even in the legacy of garbage and waste - for future generations. Why not resolve to make 1992 the year when we seri- ously undertake to. reduce * the amount of garbage we make.
