,., Q will !Wry ------------------~----- Retirees Day at Birchbank on Thursday, Oct. 10 was a pretty near perfect day for fall golf and a good crowd was on band to wind down the regular season. After the snowfall in Rossland on the Wednesday, it didn't look too good but we went out in the morning and the day turned out quite well. In fact I had my best round of the season, not so hot for some people (49) but for an old sandbagger like me, it's not bad. After our round, I played with Al McAuley, Jim Rothwell and Carlo Martin. We enjoyed some refreshment and a light lunch and voted for a new Retirees executive. I won't go into this because Guy Morey was sitting next to me and he will have the details in his "On the Tee" column before this column hits the paper. We didn't have too good a brand of weather for the holiday weekend. I went down to the course on Sunday after Russ Broughton had worked Saturday afternoon and between us we had to pick up some twenty to twenty-five fees. Today, Monday, as I write this, it is not a day that people will rush off to the golf course to get soaked by the weather and pay green fees too. It would appear this week will see the end ot our service at the course, unless the brand of weather we've had of late changes dramatically. Oh, by the way, before I move away from the subject of golf, our old friend from the Northport area, Noland Garrison, sent a token of his esteem to the Retirees club, to be given to the guy who lost the most balls on Thursday's round. A little plaque with the inscription, "Old golfers never die, they just lose their balls." Thanks Noland! I went to the Rossland Curling Association meeting at the Curling Rink on Wednesday evening. It was a good meeting in that most of the questions we had been mulling over were brought up and acted upon. Here are some of the highlights: Each of the member clubs of the association wanted a free 'spiel during the coming season and a vote gave them that right. The host club at any of these 'spiels will not be required to work on the bar and counter in the Curling lounge as the other clubs will handle these chores and it looks like all clubs will be called , . upon to handle these jobs on an interchangeable basis. Club parties usually held at Halloween, Christmas, etc., will be on a minimum rent basis, plus any wages for clean-up. Permits for the bar will allow an opening at 11 a.m. until midnight and a licence will become available in February. The ice rental will stay the same as last year and last but . certainly not least, Mike Fraftchick will be back on the job this winter. To that decision may we say, Amen. Don't forget our meeting on Oct. 29 you Retirees. Bring along any prespective new members. I see where the Trail Retirees plan for 50-65 five-man rinks in their club. We can never hope for figures like those but we can always get bigger and better. Last Friday evening I watched the Warriors for the first time this season in league play. I would suggest that coach Bob Whitlock and assistant coach Rich Chobanuk have done quite a job with the club. The team has now a 2-2 record after wins over Grand Forks Border Bruins and then the 9-4 romp over the Columbia Valley Rockies. In the game I watched I would like to suggest that the officials I have watched this season are taking the new rulings a mite too literally. The players are really going to have to do a tremendous adjustment job to bring themselves to the stage of coping with over-eager officials. It's too early in the season to start banding out accolades to any specific players yet but there were a number of them out there on Friday who would bear more than a passing mention. Young Valana in goal is doing quite a job, quick and pretty sure of himself; and it seems Darryl Llndgren did a good job in Grand Forks. Good goal-tending was something we needed when we lost Bert Brooker. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the 15th they tackle the league-leading Nitehawks out in the Valley. It's good to see Roy CUler doing such a good job 'with the Valley team. Then on Friday, they entertain Spokane. Saturday a visit to Nelson and next Tuesday it's the Junior Leafs here at the arena. So, it's Good Luck, you Warriors! Til next time, then!
