Let each Rosslander apply this to himself and to thecity. What will best promote the trie interests, the development and lasting . prosperity of the city? | Is.it the contending clash and wasteful friction of inter- est against interest, of man against While it is true that competition is the life of trade, it is also true that a conflict of interests where. harmony should, prevail works wreckage and disas- ter to all concerned. But there is another side to the text, growing out of this blending | rn SEPTEMBER T 6 13 20 27 ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE OF TRAINS. Arrivefrom | | DESTINATION, Leave for and h y of i . Itis the active, aggressive spirit which works for the general good ofall. One has not far tu look for examples of towns that have been torn by civil ‘dissension and bickering, by petty jealousy and personal spite, and as a result have ceased to, move for- ward. On the other hand one can easily find examples of cities where public spirit has overshadowed _pri-, vate interests, and in them he will see the most striking instances of progress and development. There is a French expregsson, es- prit du corps, and like many other ms itis almost untranstatable. Literally it means ‘‘spirit of the body,” but that does not convey its tiue significance. It is used to ex- press that sentiment which charac- terizes a body or class of men drawn together by common’ interests or connected with one another in common organization, and is in France frequently applied to the army or to the students of a univer- sity. + It is in nosuch technical sense that we wish to use the expression, but a ns the text from which to preach a little editorial sermon. Let us take that phase of it which means the sinking of individual interest in the. common good—or, in other words, the sentiment expressed by Dumas in his powerful story of D’Artagnan and his companions in adventure, “One for all, and all for one.” It is the embodiment of this spirit which constitutes the strength of a city or of a nation, When the gov- erning and.the governed classes are at odds, wheu labor and capital are at strife, when householder and tenant are at war, ‘when employer “and employe set up contending claims, there is a waste of energy anda to mind by the old, old fable of ‘the bundle and the fagots.. On the other hand, there is no truer saying than that in union there is strength. itici and morbid brooding passes away when this. spirit takes possession of a man or of a com- munity. ADVANCE IN COAL, It is reported from London, that shipping firms engaged.in the Cana- dian trade have agreed to an. ad- vance of ten percent in freight rates because of the advance in the price of coal. So great is the demand for coal that ships enough cannot be had to supply it. Coal is worth than in Amefica, and as a result the big Atlantic liners are carrying from this side on their ovtward. voyage enough coal to take them over and part of the way back. CANADA'S GRAIN CROP. The one product that is saving many of the Mani- toba farmers from ruin is that fortu- nately they put in a greater amount ot winter wheat than ever before. This is far ahead of the spricg wheat, which in the western part of the province is reported as absolute- ly worthless. In Alberta and Assi- niboa the weather, though dry thfoughout the summer, was not‘so warm and consequently the yield is better. The farmer has one source of relief. Itis predicted that the price for the new crop of wheat will be the best ever obtained. EDITORIAL NOTES. For some mysterious reason the false fire alarms in this city ceased as suddenly as they began. The owners of the mines in the vicinity of Johannesburg, South At- tica, are offering great inducements: to the young Canadians, especially mechanics, to stay in Africa and work at the mines as soon as the war is over. So many Hollanders who formerly worked at the. mines have left the country that there is how a great scarcity of competent hands, Spain has adopted the 24-hour system of keeping time, the same asonontheC. PR. In all rail- way, mail, telegraph, telephone and steamship service in the peninsula and the Balearic islands, and in alt the ministerial offices, the courts aod all public’ works, time will hereafter be regulated by the time of the Greenwich observatory, com- monly known as western. European time. It is now generally understood that the federal general elections will be held during the first week in November, likely Tuesday, the 6th ofthat month. Such at all events is the date fixed upon by those who claim to be in a position to give what is said to be ao atithiorstative opinion. Address a, &C.
