Porites B4 Carle picking by. helicopter | Experimenta with heli- copter cone picking systems within the Nelson forest region have helped the re- forestation crew to declare the 44,000 litres of cones. collected to date to be a bumper crop. More’ cones have been collected in the Nelson region than in anywhere else in the province this year despite . moderate damage inflicted on many cones by insects and disease. Promising seed bearing cones from trees in areas inaccessible by road would have spoiled and gone un’ picked without the help of the helicopter cone picking units like the popular Chilson model. The metallic collection cage of the basket-shaped device worked like its inven- tor Charlie’ Chilson said it would when tested at Fau- quier and Grand Forks. The collection cage was filled with ‘spruce cones and branches collected from up to seven trees during a fast 15-minute operation at Fauquier. ° Once the unit is to the chopper the pilot .joc- keys it over the top of the target tree. As the unit is lowered, the tree top with its cone fruit is threaded through a central hole. When the unit ascends, the branches with their cones break off into the collection CASTLEGAR NEWS, September 17, 1980 System works cone crops that are harvested each fall. When a good crop is in store, helicopter cone picking systems are good ways to ensure the crop is fully har- vested. Their limiting factor is strong winds. - ee When the cage is full, it RB _is emptied into a truck and “hauled away to be sortedand \~ sacked. Similar. systems to the Chilson one were put to use collecting cones throughout the region. Peter Fowler, reforesta- tion researcher from Nelson, is enthusiastic about the system as being a quick, economical way to reap the harvest of cones without snmaging the tree. The traditional method of cone collecting, felling the tree, is wasteful in that the e is forever lost as a cone oducer. * “The object of the exer- cise,” says Fowler, “is to col- lect seeds for Peplaatiag the same area from where the cones were picked.” A good cone tree is one having a straight posture and light limbs, Genetic quirks and fickle weather, make it. difficult to CONE PICKING systems by helicopter have p collect seed bearing cones from trees in areas inacc of cone pickers were put to work throughout the region addin Satchels of cones are shipped to the provincial seed vault where extracted seed is stored and withdrawn to be grown as seedlings as they are ‘requested by each region.
