CASTLEGAR NEWS, November 28. 1979 D6 [ Pulpit & Pew by Ministers in the West Kootenay/Boundary Area By H.M. HARVEY Grace Presbyterian Church If you don't think it helps to be a Christian when you are travelling with illness and suffering as your com- panion, then the Christ who translated suffering into free: dom of new life has not yet caught up with you. Because suffering with Christ, whatever the suffer- ing, is tolerable; suffering without Christ is intolerable. While I was spending a few days recently in the cardiac ward of a hospital at the coast, I met a gentlemen who had undergone open- heart surgery to correct two valves which had been dis- eased. Here is his story. “A couple of days before the operation on my heart I met a man from another ward of the same hospital. A young man, 32, married, with two children, And he was a Christian; a Christian of a quality which made me feel I didn't know the meaning of the word. “We talked for a long time that evening, and before I left him he said something which has become printed indelibly on my mind. Words which I take out, and have a long hard look at when my own bodily imperfections seem more blatant than usual. “He said: 'You've got to believe in yourself first, then you can believe in God. If you can’t have faith in the person you know best — yourself — how can you have faith in the God who made everything, including you? You've got to believe you can do some- thing, and then God can pick up and help you do it.’ ” Trite? Maybe. But not when you know this young man had suffered from se- vere diabetes all his life; that as a result of his illness he had lost both legs and was totally blind.” Surely this is direct Christianity at its deepest level, in action in a hospital ward, when someone whom most of us would pity, brings help to another on the eve of major surgery. "With Christ’s love and strength supporting us, the future is no longer bleak, or without hope. I believe a Christian has a two-fold ministry when he igs confined to hospital; and incidentally, the practice of this ministry will also ease his own path through illness. The first is the ministry of listening; the second a min- istry of being. Christians have to be good listeners and there are few places which offer as many. opportunities for lis- tening, and sharing other people's deepest problems, than in a_ hospital ward. Lying in bed alongside other sick folk 24 hours each day destroys barriers of phoney pride and reserve quicker than anything I know. One doesn't even need to proclaim oneself a Christian; all one has to do is respond when the first hesitant ap- proach is made, to show a sympathetic interest when the first (possibly boring} details of somebody else's case history starts pouring out. (Why is our own case history always more inter- esting?) A Christian's ministry begins here in listening. And it is surprising how often and how soon the subjects of suffering, death and the after-life, and God come up — Call for more information on glass doors, screens, and radiators... turn your fireplace into a furnace. Phone 359-7166 Contractor Enquiries WELCOME from the person who, for maybe the first time in life, is being forced to look a little more closely at the basic facts of life and death. Then the Christian is, or should be, in a strong posi- tion to help, whatever the problems thrown at him, or her, because the Lord of all creation is also the man who hung on a cross and knew about suffering at first-hand, If you ‘have the mis- fortune to be hospitalized, take heart. You will receive the support of fellow Chris- tians, surrounding you with the love of Christ. And you may also have the opportun- ity of declaring your Christi- anity. / Showbiz by Joey Sasso CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Ed Asner has it made—a loving family. one of the hottest shows on television and lots of money: But the star of CBS-TV's ‘Lou Grant’ says life wasn't ‘’strawberries and cream."
