Rhodes’ one ideal, around which all other ideals centred, was a vast United States of South Africa. His dream was a compact federated nation ‘ like the United States of America. He stood first and above all things for tne right of the governed to a voice in the government. No taxation without representation! No rule of an oligarchical ring! are cries with which he has made South Africa ring until they culminated in the d ds for which made Oom Paul throw down the gauntlet. Not the least important question in connection with the war now waging is the probable effect on the mining interests in the Transvaal, which in one sense are those of the world at large, and upon the money market of England, which is also a matter of prime concern to every nation. There are mines in the Transvaal other than those of the Uitwater- sand range, but they need not be taken into consideration at the present time, since it is the over- whelming value and importance of the Rand mines that has given to the Transvaal republic its impor- taice in the estimation of the world at large. According to the Mon- treal Herald, the value of the ore in sight in the Uitwatersand mines is $6,250,000,000. This is six times the amount of the production of the state of California between 1849 and 1893. The estimate of tho value is made by the most com- petent mining men in the world, and is based upon the probable length of 50 miles of reef, five feet : thick, working at an inclined depth of one mile, and yielding the aver- of 3,500,000 tons, which have been milled since 1895. Gigantic as this estimate seems, it appears least ir- rational to those best acquainted with the resources of the field. The total yield from the Rand mines to date is about 16,000,000 ounces of gold. The actual number of white miners employed on the Rand is now nearly 12,000, and of Kaffirs, about 55,000. THE MAN KRUGER HATES. Perhaps Oom Paul Kruger knows, and perhaps he does not, just how much his personal hatred is constantly showing in his utter- ance, private and public. When tiently: “Why don't they go and read theconstitution of the United States instead of speculating on this and doubting about that? There is no speculation or doubt about it. Home rule is not an experiment. It has been worked out and solved in the United States for more than a hundred years.” Another time, commenting on the villification that was being poured | rs in the English papers on South Ags rican’ ambitions and on him per- sonally, he said: “That is the sort of talk that. led to Bunker Hill. Iam loyal. The Cape-is loyal. But continued: in- alienate the most loyal. If Enge | or United States of South Africa is notan ill-sounding name,” . The eastern markets have been ransacked and everything in the way-of canted meat bought up for the British army. There is alsoa large demand for hay and oats, as well as hores and mules, caused by English purchases. With the uni- versal demand for forage for the American army in the Philippines, the farmers of the United States than ever before, .in Spite of the of the absence of Joe Leiter from the wheat pit. All kinds of farm pro- duce and live ‘stock bring better prices than ever before, and the de- mand bids tair‘largely to exceed the supply. Hon. F. Carter Cotton it seems ought to be given credit for his per- in looking after his p 1 tences. It is but a few weeks since he visited Rossland and here he is again. It’s strange what a fascina- tion the various parts of the prov- ince hold for political aspirants as an election approaches. for Cecil Rhodes infl d him when he flung his impossible ulti- matum in England’s face and prac- tically declaired for war just when all things seemed making hopefully for peace. Whenaman as strong as Oom Paul hates he does it with an intensity which, even more than he suspects, may bend awry the usual even, true lines of his judge- ment and leads him to acts his natural, cold wisdom would not endorse. “That murderer,” is Oom Paul’s gentlest word in speaking of Rhodes, when, indeed, he can so far overcome his loathing for the man as to refer to him at all. Next to religious fervor, the pre- dominating sentiment in Oom Paul's mind is hatred for this grand Englishman who towers as a Colos- sus amoung his countrymen in South Africa, just as Oom Paul himself towers a masterspirit among the Boers there. They are two giant figures in the world in these closing months ot the century —giants locked now in the death grapple in which either one or the other must go down with a crash never to rise again. One of the first acts of the Boer campaign was to put a price on Cecil Rhodes’ head; about the first concerted strategic move was against the place where he was entrenched. Agents for Paris Bell Addition to Rossland. Canadian Contingent Will Be Drilled on Board Ship. Toronto, Friday.—While on ship- board it is evident that the volun- teers of ‘the Canadian contingent will have plenty of work to occupy their time. Colonel Otter said: “We will drill the men during the voyage -to South Africa, giving them manual firing and physical ex- \itubes,. They will also be disciplined and taught economy, such as how to pack their things together and scrub out their quarters. On board the ship you may be sure everything will go like clockwork, and the men will be drilled in all exercises ex- cept the moving about in bodies.” “Judging by the recruits you picked out here you seem to prefer short men?” was remarked to Colo- nel Otter. “Yes,” was the reply, “I do. Of course, we do not refuse tall men, where they are physically strong and able, but men of medium height, if they are deep chested, are able to stand the work better.” “From your reports, how is re- cruiting going on at other points?” “It is slow at Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax, and something the same is reported from London. Of course, there are lots of men offer- ing, but it is a case of obtaining the best. However, if anywhere the units are not all filled, we can easily fill them from here.” “Do you anticipate that the Can- adian contingent will see any active service?” “If the war is going on whea we a Daniel Dickinson. ‘Walter L.
