Bear ‘Grass Press, Yi998 asvahenier 17 berg Island By PORTIA PRIEGERT The Canadian Press Say hello to the Joneses of the 1990s. You may have trouble recognizing the fictional family of popular lore — and keeping track of them in the coming decade will be no mean feat. Families will be leaner — often minus a father or children — and relationships more fickle as people opt out of lifetime vows. The way we live has changed dramatically in the past decade and experts predict the changes will con- tinue in the 90s. So don’t expect to borrow nails from Mr. Jones, trade meatloaf recipes with Mrs. Jones or fork over dy to their In 1986, when Statistics Canada did its last census, only 55 per cent of families were traditional — defined as two parents and at least one child. And when the agency looks into its crystal ball — at population projections based on complex statistical analysis — it sees this figure slumping to 47 per cent by MS. AND‘OTHER’ Rising divorce rates will create a surge of single- parent families. Say hellotoMs. Jones. will become place. Say hello to ‘*her significant other," Mr. Smith. At the same time, the vast influx of women into the workplace will result in smaller families and some women will choose to have noc! Say goodbye to playmates for Spnior. We make our lifestyle choices individually. But collectively those deci that will keep demographers — people who study population trends — busy for years. The falling birthrate. The greying population. Blended families. Even our language is falling behind. Remember the debate over how to introduce someone you're shacked up with? Friend? Roommate? Significant other? Even now that "t seem to be resolved. And remember the confusion over blended families — his step-son from a previous marriage, her daughter from a common-law relationship, their new baby? Sociologists and demographers think we'll play the same tune into the new millennium. TERMS SHORTER 2001. “| don’t see anything to suggest there would be a sudden turnaround, professor at the University of Toronto. Jeanine Perreault, who oversees population projections at Statistics Canada, agrees. “The whole concept of time has changed, says. ‘Before people married for life, bought a house for life and chose a career far life. ns have created shifting tides says Warren Kalbach, sociology she * “Now people go for short-term relationships, more segmented time."” All these changes have immense implications for public policy. With the declining importance of the family, Canadians will expect society to help them raise children and care for aging parents. One big concern is the falling birthrate. In 1987 — the latest year for which statistics are available — women, on average, had 1.66 children. That's down from 1.75 in 1980 and well below the 2.17 needed to replace the population. The level is expected to hover around 1.7 — or even fall alittle — in the next decade. COST AFACTOR “Factors such as the cost of raising children — in. cluding the cost arising from the interruption of a woman's career — could contribute to a continued downward trend,”’ the Economic Council of Canada warned this year in its annual review. Canada’s population — now about 26 million — is still growing, but slower than in the past. Assuming Ottawa doesn’t dramatically boost im> migration — 150,000 people were admitted in 1988 — the population is expected to begin declining by 2025. Many believe the government has little choice but to admit more immigrants, continuing to increase our ethnic diversity with people from Asia, Africa and Latin Lifestyle changes expected to continue The low birthrate is worrisome for Quebec, where women receive $3,000 from the provincial government for having a third child, a move aimed at maintaining the province's distinctive French character Other trends to watch in the "90s? The good news is that people can expect to live longer. Girls born in 1986 have a life expectancy of 80 years, on average, while boys born the same year can ex- pect to live 73 years. Children born in 2001 will probably live three years longer, baring any catastrophic environmental or health disaster But longer life spans and lower birthrates mean the population is rapidly getting greyer. With fewer young people paying taxes, governmen- ts will have to take a hard look at.how they will pay for old-age pensions, nursing homes and social services for seniors. And with medical advances allowing seniors to lead fuller lives into thier 70s, 80s or even 90s, their expec- tations will mount Ottawa, casting a nervous eye on the burgeoning federal deficit, decided this year to begin forcing seniors with incomes over $50,000 to pay back at least a portion of their federal old-age pensions at tax time. Policy makers still have time to plan, however. The full impact of the aging population won't be felt for another 20 years — when the baby-boom generation begins to hit retirement age.
