STUDENT AFFAIRS The Student Union Student government will develop in response to needs expressed by the student body. In these first formative years, there will be much scope for innovation, experimenta- tion, and the involvement of the entire college community in the development of the College’s traditions. The role of Student Government is vital to the life of Selkirk College. Through its executive arm it coordinates student activities, promotes student welfare and repre- sents the students to the College authorities and to the community. Its aim should be to ensure that students receive maximum benefit from college life by participation in academic, social, cultural and recreational programmes. Clubs and Organizations The College adheres to the principle that many significant learning experiences take place outside of the regular classroom situation. To this end, it is anticipated that a vigorous co-curricular programme, involving both students and faculty, will develop as an adjunct to the formal programme. In order to facilitate this development, the entire area beneath the library has been set aside as a student lounge, where informal discussion can take place among students and with faculty members. Office and room space is available for such student activities as evolve from the expressed needs of the student body. There will be opportunity for clubs of all kinds, providing that the request comes from the students themselves. These might include drama groups, music, debating, fencing, religious clubs, vocational and cultural groupings, and so on. The college schedule of classes has been arranged to leave ample time for such co-curricular group activity. Athletics The College intends to work towards full participation in inter-collegiate sports. During the first year, an inter-collegiate hockey team and basketball team will be formed. Additional sports will be added as interest and funds are available. Partici- pation in intercollegiate athletics will be dependent upon a student maintaining satis- factory academic performance. A regular programme of intra-mural sports will be conducted so that all who wish to participate will have opportunity to do so. Activities such as volleyball, basket- ball, floor hockey, curling, touch football, bowling and fencing, will be included in the programme. The student government will be responsible for the intra-mural sports calendar. College authorities feel that because of the physical facilities and coaching per- sonnel available in the area, a very strong track and field team can be developed. The College Bookstore The bookstore located on the campus has been established for the convenience of students and faculty. It will supply all textbooks and will accept special orders for 24
