CASTLEGAR NEWS, April 16, 1980 West's Department Store holds 50th anniversary Began in 1930 with stock valued at $670 This weekend marks the 50th Growth began with the invicta t 'y of Castle- gar's most up-to-date shop- ping facility, West's Depart- ment Store, housing hard- ware, ladies wear, yard goods, sporting goods, toys, major appliances and a travel agency. West's Department Store, under the ownership of Wally Horning, Peter Vatkin, and Mrs. 0.J. (Lee) Friesen, originated in 1903 as Castlegar’s first retail busi- ness built by W.J. Farmer, which fron: its original con- ception makes it a business of 77 years, It was housed in a two-storey building location in a wooded area where the Masonic building -is now located. The store was heated by @ pot belly stove and until lectricity came to Castl ig of a to this storeto handle meat and ‘groceries while clothing and hardware’ remained.’on the It also housed the first switch board used to tele- phone long distance. West's Department Store was established in April 1 of 1930 when Mr. West took over the business with stock valued at $670. The store also contained the post office. The business experi- enced a low but steady growth until 1986 when the Castlegar Water Co. was formed and then it expanded rapidly with the building boom that followed the water company's formation. During the areas’ growth was lighted by lanterns and candlelight. The top story was a hall utilized for church, Sunday school, meetings and Christ- mas concerts. the first and now a resident of Castlegar follow- ing his retirement, George MacAndrew, had an apart- ment above the original store when the hall was changed to give him living quarters and - an office. ‘ Later the apartment also housed Castlegar's first doc- tor, Dr. J.L. Gayton, where he also maintained an office. In 1940 the business expanded to its larger quar- ters, moving along with the Post office to an entirely new building where the present store is now located. Nine years later an apartment was added to the top. The old building was used as a warehouse by Mr. West for the next eight years. With its sale to the Twin Rivers Holding Co., this building was demolished to make way for the Twin Rivers building (which now bears the masonic symbol) into which the post office was transferred in 1960. Throughout this period steady growth necessitated periodic additions and re- modelling of the store's pre- mises. The building continued to serve the growth of the community. When a new post office building was put up by the government, the space was then used to house the Bank of Commerce. West's Department Store, with its major expan- sion in 1974 added 7,000 square feet to its existing 8,000 for a total of 16,000 square feet. On'Jan. 1, 1978, the Bank of Montreal bullding was purchased allowing in November of the same’ year. for West's Department Store to add still a‘further 2,600 square feet bringing it to its present total of 17,600 square feet. Art collection stirs controversy Vidkun Quisling, the Norwegian Nazi leader ex- ecuted as a traitor after the war, left a large art collection that includes paintings by Rubens, Monet and Boucher. ling’s art treasures have been discovered in the apartment of his widow, also representing British in- terests and carrying a British diplomatic passport. This passport enabled him to get the art treasures, which he bought from the Russian aristocracy, out of the coun- try. Unless the Norwegian state can claim the Quisling art collection, which is doubt- ful, the whole collection might be sold at an auction in London. Maria Quisling once contacted the British auction- eers Christie's to sell some _ paintings, but when a rep- resentative from Christie's came to Norway, she had changed her mind and did no receive him. : building was a two-storey thé world having over 29 structure which has allowed years.of experience’ in ‘this for rental of office in the field.
