St. Joseph’s CWL
names president

An impressive ceremony of
the installation of the new
executive of St. Joseph's
Catholic Women's League
was held recently after the
Lady of Good Council mass
Father Guinan and Past
President Bessie Schiavon
presided over the ceremon-
ies.

The new slate of officers is
as follows: past president

held June 9 at 6 p.m. in the
Catholic Centre. This is a
family affair.

On June 11 there will be a
mass followed by breakfast
at the Hi Arrow to honor
Father Guinan on his birth-
day, also his Ardination An-
niversary.

read with Diana Pilla and
Blondine Perra both giving

held May 12 with the opening
prayers said by Father Fui-
nan, Bessie Schiavon con-
ducted the first business
portion of the meeting before
turning the Gavel over to the
new president Diana Pilla.

confirmation reception Also
for the potluck supper to be

Reports indicated the con-
vention was very successful.

Mrs, Sehiavon read her
annual report and the finan-
cial report which will soon be
in the church bulletin.

She also thanked her ex-
ecutive and all the ladies who
helped,
Father Guinan thanked the
ladies for the help and
assistance to the church.
Sister Christina Marie also
thanked the ladies.

President Diana Pilla en-
couraged the members to
participate at all the pre-
viously mentioned activities.

The meeting was ad-
jouned with closing prayers
by Father Guinan.

The Victoria Earnings Ex-
emptions Project allowed be-
tween 4,000 and 6,000 people
a month to pocket more of
the money they earned
through part-time and tem-
porary jobs.

Human Resources Minister
Grace McCarthy said the
Project was not successful
but Opposition critic Rose-
mary Brown produced two
leaked government reports
on the project Thursday after
McCarthy refused to table
them in the house.

According to Brown, the
project was doomed, to fail
because it. didn't last. long
enough.

Normally, a single person
on social assistance can only
earn $50 a month without
subtracting the money from
the assistance they receive.
People with dependents can

But participants in the i

project were paid according
to a different set of rules.

Both singles and people
with dependents did not have
their assistance cut if they
earned less than $100 a
month in wages. If they,
earned more than $250 a
month, they were allowed to
keep 25 per cont of the
wages.

According to copies of the
reports, dated December,
1979, and May, 1980, these
incentives seemed to produce
few effects. The first report
stated the first five months of
the project cost the govern-
ment $27,000 but that
amounted to less than one-
half of one per.cent of the
welfare benefits, the gov-
ernment would normally pay
these people.

“People’s habits seem to
change slowly and then only
ifa new strategy seems more
secure than the old," the first
report concluded.

Rendez-vous Canada is a
joint projects of the Canadian
Government Office of Tour-
ism and the 10 provincial

year major tour wholesalers
and tour operators from
around the -world, to meet
their Canadian counterparts
who can supply sightseeing,
attractions, entertainments,
outdoor experiences, meals,
transportation, and accom-
modations to meet the grow-
ing demand from abroad.

year's end,
