More than 130 parents, friends and clubbers sat down to a plate of splendid chicken and “fixin's” before the club awards were distributed. Awana derives its name from the scripture verse 2 Timothy 2:15 . . . “a workman that needeth not to be ashamed.” The club is international, interdenominational in its scope with its motive to teach Christian education. It was conceived and promoted in Chicago 32 years ago and has been in operation in Castlegar for the last five years, touching the lives of over 200 boys and girls during that time. Using firm but kind discipline, emphasis is placed upon ethies of Biblical standards as an alternative to the many questionable life patterns to which young people are subjected today. The Castlegar chapter sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church, but attended also by boys and girls of other or no church affiliation, take their approximately 24 leaders. The several club divisions in age groups from Kindergarten to Grade 8 meet after school or early evening one night a week. Two meetings a week are required to accommodate the several clubs which on occasion have numbered in total 70 members. The clubbers are encouraged to Bible-based handbooks, they heart, compete for various prizes and enjoy outings winter and summer. The Timothy award, an outstanding prize for achievement has been won by only three clubbers: Philip Wiebe, Kirstin Mason and leader Dave Roberts. Commander Rod Kennedy with his wife supervise the club. training under the study from learn Bible passages by Bev “It gives the young people a standard by which to guide their life,” says Kennedy. It may be con: troversial but for me it raises issues that every thinking human being must grapple with sooner or later. Much of the current debate on this issue speaks to the converted. But there is very little dialogue across the great chasm that separates one group from the other. Loaded language only re- duces the chance of real communication. The debate over when life begins is a red herring. Med. ical science has trouble deal- ing with the ethies of abor- tion and that is where in- sights from other disciplines are required. We may not be able to reach consensus on exact moment “life” begins — be it that we dare not presume to enter his domain. Many Christian people fall lieve that abortion is an af- front to a life-giving God. The whole abortion contro- versy, for me, is a direct re- sult of what has been called, for want of a better term, the sexual revolution. If there were no unwanted pregnan- cies, there obviously would be no need to terminate them. The crucial issue for me as a clergyman — and the issue that no one wants to touch — is sexual irresponsibility. Un- controlled sexuality brings unwanted pregnancy. And social convenience dictates abortion as the easy way out. Instead of calling for sex- uality that is confined to the marriage bond, people want to remain with the status quo and therefore call for abor- tion as the only other alter- native. evntetue mam see cone conception, ion, The New T calls 73 Greek phos em 88 Kind o truserte 188 San quickening, or viability out- irresponsible sexuality what 14 Engine need 1 Boros = Bowe erat side the Karn — but ie & really ie = But it also ton 82 Noted — e offers a solu — God's son 70 Variety of 67 fe” Recher” ge ate “toad” | unborn child is an individual makes an atoning sacrifice to 10 rom 04 Rechtees os Rasta = bf renfhnmnnd separate from the mother forive sin and offers that a and on forgiveness to all who will TTT] her for nurture and pro- receive it by faith. shove ws 2 di a tection before birth.
