The golf tourism overview commissioned by B.C.’s Ministry of Tourism, Recreation and Culture, predicts the golfing population will double in B.C. by the year 2000, and according to the college’s tourism career training depar tment head Cyndi J. Werbowsky, there is already a healthy demand for individuals with the proper training in_the, management and operation of golf and country clubs “1 can only see the opportunities for careers in golf tourism growing substantially in the next decade,"’ she said What helps to make Selkirk College's golf club management program unique is that it draws on various sources of expertise to package a program relevant to a specific industry, the college says. While the hospitality service aspects of the program are drawn from existing sources within Selkirk College itself, the aspects of the program—telating to the layout and design, turfgrass management, facilities, and equipment are drawn from an established “turfgrass management program offered at Alberta's Fairview College “This co-operative approach to meet a perceived in dustry demand is something that hasn't occurred in education téo frequentlyy"’ Werbowsky said Applications are being accepted now for the 19-month course beginning in September. Students enrolling in the managerial positions in the golf tourism sector,”” Wer bowsky said Selkirk College's golf club management advisory committee is comprised of several outstanding professionals in the field of golf and country club management. The committee is chaired by Jim LeFevre, general manager of the Vernon-Golf and Country Club, whois assisted by Blake Bingley, manager of the Birchbank. Golf and Country Club in Trail, Tom Holosi, manager of the Marine Drive Golf Course in North Vancouver,. Dan Pell, former superintendent of the Kimberley Golf Course abo has recently assumed the management of the Periddis Golf and-Country Club in Calgary, Alex Martin, former manager of the Kokanee Springs Golf and Country Club who is now associated with SCORE magazine and Jerry Letner, co-ordinator of, Fairview College’s turfgrass management program. “We are excited about this unique program offering and are gearing up for our September intake of students,”” said Werbowsky, indicating that even before the formal promotion of the program’ existeitce, there is already keen interest in the golf tourism sector. By SELINA MOORE Thisis the pledge of a growing approach to learning being introduced into B-C- classrooms Founded in New Jersey, in 1974, Olympics of the Mind began as a program designed for gifted students, to help them develop creative problem-solying skills through group co-operation The program has since broadened out to recognize the unique creative ability of every student including the Jearning-disabled. The program is available to schools under the auspices of the Olympics of the Mind Inc., a non-profit corporation funded by IBM. There are 120 schools in B.C. involved in the OM program, including W.E. Graham high school in Slocan 1 Curriculum materials for the program offer teachers guidelines-for introducing creative problem-solving ac tivities into their elemeatary and secondary language ar ts, mathematics, science, sgcial studies, and technology education programs. Through these activities students fearn-to-evaluate-their-ideas-to-arrive-at-innovative solutions Program recognizes creative ability This process stimulates a creative approach to lear ning; developing’ individual artistic, intellectual, and mechanicat-attributes;—and-encouraging~ students to collaborate As groups, or teams, students have an opportunity to contribute to a specific long-term problem solution and demonstrate their approach in competition. The long-term problems are developed to cover a wide range of interests from engineering, designing, and building to the performing arts. Some of the problems are designated as non-linguistic to enable deaf students and students speaking other languages to participate in the program Regional competitions are held each y The winning team will go on to the provincial competition April 8 in Vancouver. The advancing teams will com- pete in the world finals in Denver, Colo. in June Olympics of the Mind isan exciting and progressive approach tolearning.
