Council race strikes a nerve Neil Rachynski ; NEWS REPORTER Lawrence Chernoff isn’t happy | with what a couple of Castlegar’s by- election candidates are saying. The incumbent Castlegar city councillor said two of the three nominees are focusing on an irrelevant issue during the campaign. “T’ve taken some exception to what’s been said — the hon- esty thing. They're saying we’re doing something dishonest here,” Chernoff said. Chernoff, who wouldn’t names the candidates, said honesty at city hall isn’t even an issue for Saturday’s byelection. “My personal feeling is that honesty doesn’t even come in- to play. “You're in a position of trust,” he said. “I've been meeting the goals I’ve set for myself for council. “You have to work as a team or it doesn’t function. It’s like playing soccer eee got to move the ball as a team or you don't score the goals.” Councillor Jim Chapman agrees. “(The candidates) are talking about something that hap- pened three years ago,” Chapman said. “The Price Waterhouse report was made a long time ago,” he said “They are talking about that report as if it still applies <<] to us today and that’s a crock. That’s bull++++,” The $24,000 report, commissioned - over two years ago, criticized Castle- gar’s operations and management, giving city hall failing grades in areas including honesty, service and teamwork. “We’ve got one of the most progressive, most dedicated councils in a long time,” Chapman said. “I find that a damned insult. I can only defend what’s happened in the last two years. There’s more going on in the last year-and-a-half than has gone on in the last 10 years. “They’re flogging a damned dead horse.” Mayor Audrey Moore wouldn't address Chernoff’s displea- sure with the two candidates. Moore would only say, “I wish (the candidates) all the best. I’m quite prepared to work with whomever the people choose.” Although she disagrees that council is closed, Coun. Doreen Smecher said the city should deal with honesty as an issue. “It’s a perception, and we have to change that perception,” Smecher said. “We have to regain our credibility.” Smecher said there are some things the candidates have voiced that she agrees with. “I can’t argue with what they’ve been saying,” Smecher said. “I agree with Doug Green saying he’d like to make the budget understandable.” NEW LABOR LAWS HAVE INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES READY FOR A FIGHT, PAGE 3
