On Saturday evening after the Rossland-Beaver Valley hockey game I dropped in for a drink and ran into a gentleman who related a rather unhappy story tome. Some of my readers may remember that I wrote some nice things about a young lady who looked like she might go a long way in the world of swimming. Pam Baines swept everything that was available to her as a youngster but now she can only indulge in the sport as a pasttime because of medical problems, her father Winston tells me. When one thinks of such a thing happening to such a brilliant young Canadian prospect it sort of gives you a rather sad feeling. It's just one of those painful happenings, but why does it have to happen to one so young and eager to excell at something she enjoyed more than anything? We shall never understand the way that the fates work, I guess. I extend to Pam my hopes for a speedy recovery. On the subject of hockey, I see where the Western International Hockey League has shifted with such teams and Brooks and Banff now entered in the league. This is quite a shift since it used to be centred on Trail and Rossland in the West and Kimberley and Cranbrook in the East. Quite a switch, but I guess the Kootenays ~•t raise the enthusiasm or the money which are quite necessary to run a successful operation. Our Retirees Curling Club is getting along quite well, seventh games were played Tuesday, I'm writing this in the morning and two games in this competition will be played after lunch. I may get the results from those, they are between Fred Munro and Phil Bateman who have identical records of three wins and three losses each. In games this morning it was Angus Popplewell 5-1-1 over Bob Stevenson 1-6, Dan Burnett 3-1-3 beat out Russ Broughton 3-1-3, Norm Harry 5-2 beat Roy Fines 3-13 and in the other contest Bert Morrow 4-3 beat our Jake Lilburn 2-5. Everyone is having a good time and that's what it's all about, isn't it? So the standings show Popplewell on top with Harry a close second, Morrow at 4-3 is next with a log jam next, Broughton, Fines and Burnett all at 3-1-3, Lilburn is 2-5 and Stevenson is bringing up the rear with one win in seven games. Now I'll say, 'Til next time, then!
