Still the "Cheapest Date”

1. New York City's “cheapest
date" came to a sad end
recently and to’ many of this
city's beleaguered citizens Its
. passing seemed to hurt even
more than some of New York’a
bigger financial problems,
For 78 years it has cost
only a nickel to ride the Staten
Island Ferry—a 20-minute ride
across the waves of New York
Harbor, aniffing the ocean
breezes and watching the
breathtaking skyline of Man-
hattan, the Statue of Liberty,
and the big ships outward

bound for foreign ports,

the price of a Broadway show,
or any of the city’s more famous
attractions, the Staten Island
Ferry ride was a swell place to
take a date,

Under the impact of “fun
city's" financial crisis, the price
went up from 8 nickel (actually
10 cents for a round trip) to 25
cents for the 10-mile round trip,
