Doukhobor heritage part of Castlegar The Doukhobors of Can- ada are, by a large maj ority, people striving to with an objective of being creative, forgiving and not retaliating with violence. The: people have always been faithful in up- holding a firm belief in the spiritual guidance of those individuals who they be- lieve are endowed with greater -spiritual under- standing. Changes were felt in the organization when one Peter Verigin-Chistiakow renamed the Christian Community of Universal Brotherhood to the Union the non-violent approach to life. The Union of Spiritual Communities of Christ is represented by John J. Verigin as an honorary chairman. This is the larg- est Doukhobor organiza- tion in Canada. The most attractive events of the year in the Doukhobor midst is the festival of the Union of Youth of the Spiritual Communities of Christ which takes place on May Day weekend. The three-day event in- from all over the continent, including Europe and USSR with which the or- ganization has cultural ties. The other important event is the Declaration Day taking place on the first weekend in August. This is a one-day event and includes a prayer meeting, speeches on the theme of the day and singing. The most colorful part of the occasion is the picnic lunch where all those present participate. Places of interest in the Doukhobor community are the Cultural Centre at Brilliant where the great Columbia and the mighty Kootenay rivers meet: the taurant located across from the Castlegar Air- port.
