CASTLEGAR NEWS REVIEW, March 24, 1985 Palm Dairy upgrades Palm Dairies Ltd. has completed expansion and up- grading of its Nelson plant at a cost of $600,000. Despite the economic sit uation Jack James, president and general manager of Palm Dairies, gave the go-ahead for the expansion in May 1982. Construction started right away on large cememt pads on which an ice building unit and a large milk storage silo would sit. There the empty cases all go through a new automatic case washer. All the milk processed and packaged in the local plant comes from dairy farmers within a 100-mile radius of Nelson. The largest source of milk is the Creston Valley. During the expansion local suppliers and businesses were used whenever pos. sible Palm distributes milk and iee cream throughout the East Kootenay from the company’s Cranbrook depot and the West Kootenay from the Nelson plant in modern refrigerated trucks. Milk is also still delivered to house- holders in Nelson and Trail. Palm has 38 full-time em- ployees working at its Nelson operation, plant manager Waters said. The company hopes to remain a viable in- dustry in the region “and will do so if Kootenay residents support us,” he said. Specialty bulk dairy prod- ucts are available at the Nelson office on 711 Radio Avenue. Guided tours are also available to service clubs, schools and other members of the public.
