Two weeks ago I acted as midwife to our oldest cow. After the hard work was over, the fun began. Mother licked and licked until her new youngster was suitably clean and shiny. The calf knew what was next. It's both painful and hilarious to watch a newborn calf repeatedly try to get to its feet, then take its first wobbly steps. But before Jong it’s looking for food, and knows jast what “te do when it “finds the source. I always try to get home when another calf is on the way, just for the show. But it’s more than a good show. To me, it's like worship to watch the wonder of nature's ways. Truth is, I'm usually thinking some praise-prayers at a time like that. With summer coming to the beautiful Kootenays, I suspect there'll be a whole chorus of praise-prayers of. Box 1200, Castlegar, B.C. VIN 3J1 — 365-7292 Our Action Ad Phone Number is 365-2212 fered to the Creator, as na. ture’s ways move many to wonder and worship. The second experience that has been coming back to me is as much sound as sigbt. It was really something to attend the pop concert at SHSS when local and Pen- ticton high schoolers did their musical thing. The music itself was won derful. How these young people can become so accom plished in a few short years is a lesson to all of us about developing our abilities. However, I sat there not only enjoying the music, but moved at seeing 80 many fine young men and women har moniously giving their best, and I hoped (yes, secretly prayed) that their next few years would be as satisfying as their last few years of ac complishment and friendship. I wished for the grads es pecially that in spite of uncertain economics they would know the satisfactions found in developing their skills, being with friends, and making others happy, as they were doing that night. And I thought how all of us, at any age, could view making music as a parable of what human life is meant to be. A third experience that keeps returning is of several almost middle-aged men sit. ting around a table at our church, gratefully remember- ing a fellow-minister who had died, and gently respecting each others’ denominational and personal perspectives. “How good it is when brothers dwell together in unity,” it says somewhere in the Good Book. Unity is not the same as agreement. To me, unity is mutual respect and concern, under God, as people work, each in their own ways, toward a common goal. I felt such unity at this meeting of the ministerial. I'think our homes would be happier. politics more co-op- erative, and the world much safer if we'd only quit think. ing that all truly intelligent people would, of course, see things our way. Realizing how unintelli gent we are before the One who can never be understood or explained should help us feel closer to fellow humans who, like us, are following the light they happen to have. I wish all readers a good summer with many happy. haunting experiences. Centre in full swing The Canada Employment Centre for Students in Trail is in full operation and staff members Sal Johal and Lisa Dallas say business has been brisk so far. Approximately 600 stu dents have registered with the centre and many more are expected to do so as the end of high school nears. The student office has handled more than 200 job vacancies so far this year for everything from yardwork ers to store clerks to engin. eers. “Although the staff of the centre is pleased with the results to date, many more jobs are needed to help local students, and we would like to encourage all employers to hire a student for a day, week month or summer,” said Johal in a prepared release. Who is an employer? Who can hire students? What can and will students do? Any body can be an employer as long as they have a job that needs to be done. A job can be anything from mowing the lawn, to a stack of letters that needs to be typed while the secretary is on holidays, to a gas pump that needs operating while all those extra cars are on the highways during the summer months. In an effort to promote student employment, today through next Sunday has been declared national Hire A Student Week. Across Canada, Student Employ ment Centres will be prom oting student employment by setting up displays and pro- motional events. The main objective of Hire A Student Week is to make everybody aware of the stu dent employment program and so have more people hiring students. SEMINARS ON R.R.S.P.
