Please note tickets will not be available at the door Richie runs out of ways By TIM O'CONNOR The Canadian Press Like Ronald Reagan, Lionel Richie knows the way to through the plain folks: keep it simple. And like The t Communicator, it's Richie's soothing delivery that entrances and woos the masses. And if you're talking about love, well, you can just keep saying it over and over and over again — and the people will buy it. But it appears the romantic balladeer has run out of ways to say “I love you.” There are only seven new songs on Dancing on the Ceiling (Motown), most of them drawn out far too long to support the musicai crumb of an idea. The album even includes Say You, Say Me, which Richie has previously recorded Seemingly without new ideas of his own, the former singer with The Commodores borrows musical styles that fit him like an oversized suit. On Sela, he mimies reggae with a truly silly accent, while on Tonight Will Be Alright, he laughably imitates Bruce Springsteen. On the countrified Deep River Woman, his incredibly smooth vocals save the hackneyed “I'll mend my ways” premise The song Don't Stop, however, is a Marvin Gaye sex heme that really does work, partly because love is brought down to earth. On this album Riehie doesn't say anything more sub- stantial than what's found on greeting cards. And, as usual, it’s sloppier than a dog's kiss. Yeech! RECYC COWPUNK through a delete bin is generally depressing. The misfit albums that wind up in there are usually by groups who latched on to a trend that was pretty limited, or that they never understood Scrounging Van Go (Curb) by The Beat Farmers is a sure bet for the delete bin. It's yet another bit of recycled cowpunk. In will probably be as out-of-date as platform shoes. Already Rank and File, one of the first bands, has moved on to a year or two, it country punk new musical territory The Beat Farmers strum “jangly” and draw out open guitar chords heir vocals with a nasal twang in the guise Americana. In the process, they trash Neil Young's Powderfinger, and do terrible imitations of Tom of authentic Petty and Johnny Cash. These guys are so terrible they don't have the guts to be themselves RARELY CONNECTS If George Thorogood were a boxer, he'd be a street fighting slugger, swinging frantically but rarely connecting. Thorogood’s complete lack of finesse and smarts proves his undoing While portions of his early studio records connected because of their gritty rawness, Live (Capitol) is a blustery collection of Thorogood standards that proves: (a) he may be the worst singer on record today, and (b) his guitar playing is all brawn and no brain The heart-of.gold white bluesman pushes himself to the maximum, but the bop-til you-drop spirit only makes his faults more embarrassingly clear. Not even Wendy O. Williams goes off key this much Particularly on Live, he bludgeons the most clinched blues licks and riffs to death. Song after song features the same rockin’ vamp, until you wishes he'd never heard of John Lee Hooker. There's plenty of energy on Live, all of it flailing away uselessly salesmanship helped her win a role opposite Rob Lowe in a actors looked too much like Hl ARROW BEER & WINE STORE Open Every Day Til Christmas Eve HOURS: MONDAY - SATURDAY, 9 A.M. - 11 P.M. (CP) — Jack Munro, regional presi- dent of the International Woodworkers of America, said the Interior Forest Labor Relations Association has fined member companies who came to terms with the union on the wording of con- tracting out clauses in their working agreements. Munro, whose union has been on strike at most British Columbia forest operations since July 23, claimed a levy of $4-an-hour is being charged to the companies by the association. He main- tained these companies are paying the overhead for larger firms and the amounts involved are staggering. The key issue in the strike, which has idled 20,000 wood- workers, is the use of outside contractors to do work which the union said takes jobs away from its members.
