Couples are waiting longer to wed, having fewer children or hone, pushing two careers, divoreing and pag 4 (but perhaps not as much). Fewer than one in three families is the prototypical mother, father and children. Many families are headed by a single person, usually female and poor, and there's no marriage licence in many households, The number of people living alone in Canada and the U.S. mushroomed to more than 20 million in 1985. And more adult children stil! live at home with mom and pop. All these shifts have evoked a fountain of books, articles, marriage seminars, family, careers, babies, conflicts, working moms. Some point out marriage has never been easy. They note that for better or worse, some 2,700,000 gambled at the altar in Cangda and the U.S. in 1986, the last year for which figures are available. It hit a four-year low in 1984, when figures showed 65.8 births per 1,000 womenpaged 18-44, down from 1980's 77.1 per 1,000. e@ Women expect to bdar fewer children. In a 1988 survey, women aged 18 to 84 expected to have an average 2.1 childreg. In 1967 it was 3.1 children and in 1979, 2.2 children. | Where 4 mariage headed? @ Many marriages do last. Sar Levitan and Richard Belous in their 1981 book, What's Happening to the American Family? predict that “two out of every three marriages entered into today will last a lifetime.” ‘They also say that at some time, 40 per cent of all marriages will end in divorce. (The figures seem skewed because of a small percentage of multiple-repeat marriages.) Overall, divorce rates have been steadily inching up since 1960. Between six per onah and seven parcenst of men will divorce and between eight per cent and 11 per cent of women will divorce. People who delay marriage have a better Sues at marital stability. Married-couple families in 1982 were down to 73 per cent of total family units from 82 per cent; gaining were unwed families, up to 15 per cent from 11 per cent. But 1985 figures indicate the unwed household trend has slowed. e@ The number of never-married people is up. In 1985, 59 per cent of women 20-24 were unmarried, arecord high. There were 119 unmarried men aged 25-34 for every 100 unwed women that age. At age 35-44 there were 84 unwed men for every 100 unwed women. Over 65, there were 26 unwed men per 100 unwed women. Sixty per cent of men and 48 per cent of women 18 to 24 still lived with their parents. .
