In Flying fear help available By FELICITY MUNN The Canadian Press “All airlines have crashed at one time or another,”” Tom Cruise says impatiently to Dustin Hoffman in the movie Rain man, trying to coax him to get on a plane. “That doesn’t mean that they're unsafe.’ ”’ Hoffman mumbles. “Quantas never crashed,’ Hof fiman says flatly. It’s true and the Australian airline reports business has increased since the hit movie was released. Hardly surprising, considering one in six North Americans is afraid of flying, according to some estimates Nobody knows the exact figure because only @ small proportion of people seek treatment for the phobia. Many sufferers decide they can live just fine without flying, or they recon: cile themselves to sweating it out — perhaps with the dubious assistance of alcphol or tranquillizers — if they have to fly Mostly, people who are afraid of flying think there's nothing they can do about it But there is help and it's available in avariety of forms. There are varying degrees of fear of flying. Some fearful flyers are flight-phobic — they see an airplane as their tomb, are crippled by the fear and deal with it by avoiding flights Others are flight-anxious. They're the ones who can usually get through a flight when they have to, but it's often an excruciating ordeal. Experts say there can be several un- derlying fears or phobias: fear of repeating a previous bad flying ex- perience, fear of enclosed spaces, fear of having a panic attack, fear of heights, fear of not being in control or fear of death. t ox 3292, Castlegar. 365-5'67 104/17 THE B.C. The individual is basically taught self- hypnosis, which allows the person to keep the anxiety under control. ight program may be losing appeal Airline getting creative with points payoff By FELICITY MUNN The Canadian Press The airline industry is worried that frequent-flyer programs are losing their allure. The programs, used as a marketing tool to build airline loyalty, are beginning to pall because many frequent flyers have built up so much free travel they can’t possibly use if all. A business executive can only take so many vacations a year, and the last thing many frequent flyers want to do is climb aboard yet another plane. Atthe same time, many airlines are worried about the mounting liability of unused travel points. Most won't say what that liability totals, but Canadian Airlines International lowered profit by $3.8 million in its annual report last year to account for possible losses from its frequent-flyer program To deal with the problem, Aeroplan, Air Canada’s frequent-tlyer program, is trying out a plan that allows members to swap points for merchandise instead of travel OFFERED PHONE Acroplan members are being offered a portable Northern Telecom cellular phone in exchange for 25,000 Acroplan miles plus $1,999. The suggested retail price for the phone is $2,750. In terms of free travel, that mileage’ is worth roughly two economy tickets for a short-haul domestic trip. If the program works, Aeroplan will be able to liquidate unclaimed mileage points. But there’s a strange little sidelight to this story. A few days before Aeropian launched its promotion in mid-April ads appeared in Toronto newspapers for something called the Frequent Flyer Advantage Club. The ads offered cellular telephones at a discount in exchange for 2,000 frequent-flyer points from any airline. But frequent-flyer points in Canada are not tran- sferable to anyone except a member's immediate family. So the ads created confusion. A revised version of the ad appeared 10 days later clarifying that customers merely had to prove they had 30,000 frequent-flyer points by showing their latest airline statement. The club doesn’t buy or redeem the points. What gives? SAYS HISIDEA What gives, said Stanley Arnold, president of the Toronto-based Frequent Flyer Advantage Club, is that Air Canada is using his idea and now he’s offering them some competition. Arnold says he went to Air Canada with the proposal to offer members merchandise in exchange tor accumulated points “IL spent thrce months working that concept up for them and negotiating with m understanding they (Air Canada) would pay me one per cent of the proceeds,’ said Arnold “*And in the final hour of negotiations they advised me that was 00 much.” ufacturcrs on the Air Canada’s Sherley Grace denies some of those details concerning the airline’s dealings with Arnold. Aeroplan has tried merchandise programs betore and is merely trying them again, Grace said. It negotiated with several manufacturers before striking a deal with Nor- thern Telecom WENTONOWN Arnold, meanwhile, was also turned down by Canadian Airlines, so he went ahead with the idea on his own He claims he makes money despite the low price he offers onthe cellular phones. he says offering the deal to frequent flyers merely helps him define a market — and a big market at that There are flyers in Canada some 500,000 to 700,000 frequent There are some 500,000 to 700,000 flyers in C di ident of the lub After cellular phones, both Aeroplan and the Frequent Flyer Advantage Club plan to offer other up- scale products like portable fax machines and ultra- modern barbecues. Are the deals really deals? The prices are said to be hundreds of dollars off the recommended retail price, but discounts are available on so many goods these days that people often doen't have to pay full retail price. PRICEGOOD The Frequent Flyer Advantage Club was offering the Mitsubishi Model 900 portable cellular phone to people with 30,000 mileage points for $1,795, compared with the recommended retail price of $2,495. Phone calls to half a dozen cellular phone dealers in several cities turned up prices ranging from $2,200 to $2,495 Aecroplan’s offer — the Northern Telecom phone in exchange for 25,000 Aeroplan miles plus $1,999 — is harder to nail down, since the phone is so new that most dealers don’t have it in stock. One advantage of buying from the Frequent Flyer Advantage Club seems clear — customers get a low price but don’t lose their frequent-flyer points Aeroplan’s previous merchandise programs didn’t have much success; this time the program may be facing anew snag — competition from Arnold. Canadian Airlines, perhaps wisely, says it has no plans fora merchandise program at this time. Although the might not provide a miracle fix, the people who offer them promise that fearful flyers at the very least will be able to significantly reduce their anxiety. They may even become comfortable flyers. Here’s where to start: * Your family doctor should be able to recommend the treatment that would'be best for you. The doctor may know how to use hypnotherapy; if not, he can refer you to another doctor ex- perienced in the procedure, or to a psychologist for behavior therapy. * Behavior therapy units of phobia clinics at major hospitals should be able to help For instance, Dr. George Fraser, director of the anxiety and phobic disorders clinic at the Royal Owawa Hospital, treats fearful flyers with hypnotherapy, usually in just one session. The treatment is covered by OHIP, Ontario’s health plan, and Fraser has a drawerful of postcards sent by grateful former patients. © Seminar courses, usually limited to groups of not more than 20, are available through a few hospitals and universities. The behavior therapy service at the Montreal General Hospital offers a six-session program that teaches relaxation techniques. The final session is an hour-long “flight,” complete with sound effects and bumps, in a plane mockup used for training’at Dorval airport. The course, available in English or French, costs $250. Likewise, the University of British Columbia’s Centre for Continuing Education offers a seven-session cour- se for $250 that teaches people how to ““unlearn” their fears.
