The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, March 25, 1992 Bobby McFerrin McFerrin, 42, comes from a musical family: His father is baritone Robert McFerrin Sr., who was the first black man to sing at the Metropolitan Op- era; it was he who dubbed the vocals for Sidney Poitier in the 1959 film version of “Porgy and Bess.” Bobby’s mother, Sara, is a soprano and head of the music department at Ful- lerton Community College in California. Bobby McFerrin pursued a career in music af- ter graduating from college. He worked as a keyboardist, arranger and backup singer for lounge acts before becom- ing a solo singer in 1977. His work as a recording artist has led to nine Grammy awards and a 1988 platinum album called “Simple Pleasures,” which contained the hit single “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Two years ago, McFerrin formed a singing group called Voicestra, with which he tours.
