The Hawkettes won 3 games to none The scene was set and the gym- nasium was divided. You could smell the tension in the air. Trail on one side and Castlegar on the other. Like the Berlin Wall you could not penetrate the border. The Hawkettes came on strong from the first whistle to last blast. Stephanie Rezansoff was terri- bly disappointed, “We refused to play together during the first two matches but began to pick up the slack in the third.” With an abundance of height the Hawkettes were in the Rockettes faces all night long. Team Captain SUN SPORTS PHOTO / John Van Putten Tammara Rezansoff said, “It's not that we didn’t want to win, we did but we just could not put the finish in, unlike our worthy opponents.” In the end with a shake of the hand they knew that next year with a majority of grade 11 play- ers they would be back, and yes there will be a change in score Good luck next year girls you did real well this season. Real Perfumes Ladies JOHN VAN PUTTEN Sun Sports The season for the Stanley Humphries Senior boys volley- ‘ball team has been a rollercoaster ride through the rankings, They are now on the top of the ride with their win last Fri- day afternoon in the West Kootenay tournament over L.V. Rogers High School from Nel- son. This victory earns the SHSS boys a trip to the Provin- cials, to be held in Merritt Nov. 25-28. The SHSS boys hope is to Stay at the top of the ride and avoid the sudden drop off the edge. The ride down the rails of dis- appointment is always tougher than the ride up through the rankings to get to the top. “They played the way they should, they showed a lot of heart,” said Coach Don Lust, after Fridays win. SHSS took the first two games in the best of five series, 15-8 and 15-8. Nelson fought back and took the third game 15-9 forc- ing another match in which Castlegar played like a team with a goal, a win 15-3 and they achieved the first part of their goal a trip to the Provin- cials. Throughout the season the teams performance went through different phases. “We started the season off really good, then we fell apart at the Mt. Sentinel tournament, Kelowna was really tough, in Kimberley they eased up. Today they came back together. they were focused," Lust said. Now that they have earned a chance to play in the Provincials Coach Lust hopes they can keep the spirit going and play with all the heart they have had so far this season. “They are a really good team when they have their hearts into the game,” Lust said. Stanley Humphries School sent 17 swim- mers to The University of British Columbia in Vancou- ver this past weekend for the High School Provincial Swim Meet and came home with three medals. They earned two team Bronze medals, one in the boys 400 m Free Style Relay and the other in the 200 m Mixed Free Style Relay. The other medal was won by Justin Phillips with an individual Gold in the 50 m breast stroke It was the third year Phillips has won an individu- al medal in the breast stroke. “The last two years Justin has taken a silver, it’s good he finally got his gold, it was his last year. He was the only one to come home with an individual medal,” said Roslyn Cook who helps with coaching Cook was happy with the performance of her swimmers, considering they had a really short sea- son. They got off to a late start and had only one other meet, the Regionals. The season got off to a late start because there was not a Stanley Humphries teacher to sponsor for the team this year. Each sports team must have a member of the school staff to sponsor it, some of the teams are coached by volunteers while others are ‘Submitted Sport Photo coached by staff members. Cook was quite happy when someone stepped forward to sponsor the team. “If Alan Sheppard did not decide to be the teach- er sponsor we would not have had a team this year.” Some other swimmers placed really well and have a very good chance to improve themselves for next year’s races. Selena Fodor, who finished fifth in the 100 m Free Style, has three more years to compete in the high school level, and has an excellent opportunity to place higher in the future. “Selena Fodor had a good race, she was very tired. She will be a contender in the years to come,” Cook said. Overall, Cook said the meet was a success. There were some personal bests set and everyone did quite well, con- sidering the amount of time they had for preparation. “We had a really good time, everyone was support- ive of each other. The swimmers pulled off some really good times with the limited amount of training time.” Marie Seghers and Aimie Chemoff are the coach- es for the high school swim team. The Castlegar Aquanauts contributed $500 to help pay for P ion. Most of the swi are also involved in the Robson River Otters or the Aquanauts. Everyone is set to be a winner in this deal. Raising money for one group and saving money for the consumer will be the result The way it will happen will be the Stanley Humphries Secondary School Basketball teams selling a coupon book called “The West Kootenay Value Book”. For $19.95 the coupon book brings the pur- chaser up to $200 in savings from restaurants in Castlegar, Nelson and Trail. The coupons are good at area fast food, family and fine dining restaurants. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be used by the SHSS Athletic department to help off-set the cost of running the basketball teams The Rocker and Rockette hoopsters plan on B-Ball players going door to door offering savings selling 1,000 of the savings booklets in the next two months. The fund raising goal the teams have set is $7,500. Over the next two months members of the junior and senior boys and girls basketball teams will be selling the Diners Value Book from door to door. Interested people can call the school at 365- 7735 and arrange for personal doorstep delivery. The books were put together by Kamloops based HDS-Advancement Initiates.
