We had heard about Castlegar long before we ever came here and we all were very anxious to see what our new home would be like. We arrived in B.C. via CP Rail train at Kootenay Landing, where we transferred to the paddie ©. wheel ‘steamer Kuskanook which brought us as far as Nelson. We were then put on board the CP train again which brought us in due course to Castlegar, My father had come to - B.C..a year before this and had made a deal with a man named H. H. Kleough for some land on which ‘we.were. to settle. This land was very close to the place. . where the Kinnaird Plaza now stands, In fact, we had a wheal field'on that very spot. +My father was in partner- ship with a ‘man named “Mac” Annable who owned a sawmill near. Trail, and this is where the lumber, came from to build our house. Still well. known and living-in Castlegar are quite a few» people owe had | as neighbours: The Bloomers, the McGauloys, the. DeFoes, the Waldies, the..Sherbikos, the Salikins, the Poohachoffs and many, more who have ‘since moved away. ‘The school was built whére . Fields Store now stands and the “teacher's name was’ Mr, Keif. Tho brush at that’ time grew. so close to the building / that the branches used to rattle nthe library roof when ‘the wind blew. ‘ ‘These were some of, my first memories of Castlegar and we, the’ Defoes,/and the McGauleys and the Killoughs, along with" some other help kept. the- school going. as we - were all-large enough families - to keep ‘up’ the ; attendance record. * Actually; we — Killoughs lived in what is’ now’ the :| Kinnaird area but'we attended‘, school in Castlegar and got our mail there and this was our home town for so many years, In 1916, 0 logging company started operations on’ Merry Creek in Kinnaird and at that time it was decided to build a school there and this was done by volunteer labor, A great contributor to the cause was ao man named Mark Dumont whom the Kinnaird Dumont Subdivision was named after. Alter the advent of the school construction and the expanding logging industry in the area, Kinnaird had a brief boom and quile a few people Future Canadian Citizen Receives Recognition St, Joseph's Catholic Wo- men’s League, at its. first meeting of the new year, heard a spiritual committee report by Mrs. A. Henshaw. Mrs. Mary * Ellen Cormier and Mrs, Fran Cormier’ were also. designated hospital visiting for the month. Another January: project will aid the work of Prolife, This decision was prompted by a diocesan directive’ in which the Senate and Lay-Pastoral Council urges as a priority this year, “The Right To Life, which is only beginning with the abortion issye". ‘A raffle on a hand-hooked rug donated: by Mrs. Steve Jankola is underway. Proceeds of the raffle will go to help this cause. Special » recognition: was given to Mrs. Rena Grifone who has. been ‘successful on an imigration knowledge test ear!- ier in the week and will soon be ‘received as a new Canadian. Her sponsors for entry had been Mrs, Neliié Bloodoff and Mrs. Pat Haley. She was then presented with a rosary asa memento of the happy occasion to.come. Hosting. the festivities .were Mra, J. Kaufman and Mrs. Joan Mueller, who baked the ‘special cak i ‘Silverton Newsleffer homesteaded In the area, The Post Office, however, was still in Castlegar and remained there, and this: was really our home town and only town until years later when new highways were built and people who were working in Trail began moving out to Castlegar and Kinnaird Laway fram the smoke and jon of a city. This wus the start of the Castlegar Transportation Society, as the workers lived in Castlegar and Kinnaird and commuted every day. In 1947, there was a petition taken up by the Kinnaird residents to have a Post Office opened up in that + area, and in 1948 the first Post Office was Saati in the building where Kinicki's gas station is, From then on we got our CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, January 24, 1974 ROYAL PRIME RIB, GOV'T, INSPECTED. A good part of our life was spent in Kinnaird, and ‘some of our family was raised there. It is a beautiful place and I will never forget it, but I feel that Castlegar is our home town and the centre of our community and likewise the only sensible name for our city. + Tam not writing this with the hope of winning any contest or anything else, I think voting ona name is perhaps the most democratic way of doing this but Castlegar is and always has been the hub or centre of the Lower Arrow Lakes region, the junction of the Columbia and Kootenay rivers, the halfway mark’ between Nelson and Trail, the old steamboat landing area, and someday the hub of our: new Revelstoke-Trail- Nelson Road, when we get our new lake level road which is bound to come and which we might all fight for. We now have our postal system sel up; we have the Castlegar and District Hospital, the Castlegar .
