Calgary doctor offers
sleep illness relief

CALGARY (CP) — The
transport truck was coming
straight at Bill Martin when
he woke up in his car, driving
down the wrong side of the
highway. He yanked the
steering wheel to the right
just in time to save his life.

But Martin found himself
asleep at the wheel again just
a few days later. The beefy

times over the years, dozing
off so often that he was afraid
to drive more than 30 kil-
ometres without stopping for

apnea, a little-known illness
that affects an estimated one

a sleep apnea specialist at the
University of Calgary.

difficulty breathing after
they fall asleep. Without any

that victims, and often their
families, get so little rest
they can barely function.
Sufferers become prone to
accidents and illness.
