Our job, day in and day out, gives us first-hand experience with the trucking industry and the facts about the industry may surprise you. As you are probably aware, DCT Chambers primarily hauls wood chips and is a family-owned company. Our head office is in Vernon and we em- ploy approximately 300 people. The around fenders and air deflectors reduce wind buffeting and road spray when the trucks pass you on the highway. As a test of this, pay atten- tion the next time one of the new chip trucks passes you on the highway. Compare the wind blast to an older or other type of truck. We have touched on a few items that may be of interest to you and your readers. If allowed, we could go on and on and fill your entire with truck ii i trucks operate British Columbia, Alberta and Washington state. Our company works very hard to provide safe equipment and drivers. Some of the reasons why we have a better safety record than others are: © Our trailers have reflective tape for high visibility; * All trailers have the safety sign on the rear door indicating a phone number to call if anyone sees the vehicle operating in an unsafe man- ner; * Each truck is only allowed a maximum 90 km-h speed limit; © Each truck has an electronic, minute-by-minute trip recorder. These records are reviewed to ensure that the drivers are operating safely; © The Insurance Corp. of B.C. safety supervisor, Fergus Savage, helps to monitor DCT’s safety program; and © Each area has a manager to en- sure that discipline is followed through at the location of a-com- plaint. Our field of chip transportation within the industry has proof that it is one of the safest forms of truck tran- sportation. The fact is that chip trucks pay one of the lowest premiums available for their insuran- ce with ICBC. This is a direct result of ICBC’s statistics which show that chip-trucks-are-considered alow risk compared to other transport vehicles. The newly designed chip trailers are the safest concept in road transpor tation ever designed. A federal study was completed in 1987 that showed that the tridem super train was the —— most efficient and safest unit to tran- Sport goods on the highway. In this study, the engineers_performed_roll- over tests on all types of truck equip- ment to come up with their results. Chip trucks, by their design, have a jow centre of gravity which con- tributes greatly to their stability. The trucking industry is continually ; ing to mini impact ‘and improve safety. DCT Chambers’ chip trucks are equipped with all the latest aerodynamic devices which-result-in-less-fuel-consumption and therefore reduced emissions. The trailers have full tarps on their tops which prevents any product from escaping. The low floors, wrap Public outcry endangers loggers It is alarming to read recently all the trash being printed concerning logging companies and independent One thing that we would like people to be aware of is that most of the drivers out there, whether they are ours ‘or our competitors, are trained fe These prof drivers have millions of accident-fi ny stresses safety truck. At DCT we receive about two to three calls per month from the public, Some calls are complaints which we miles under their belts. As with any group, there are people who do make mistakes or act without consideration towards others. If you ever have an incident where a truck is operated in an unsafe manner, call the company immediately. No one wants an unsafe vehicle on the highway, whether it be an automobile or a react to and some people are calling in to compliment us on the actions of our drivers. If anyone would like to discuss the operation of DCT’s business and the safety of our .chip trucks further, please contact me. As it stands now, the logging con- tractors and their employees are sur- passing the grizzly bear and the snowy owl on the endangered species list thanks to the public outcry. The experienced woodsman is as qualified to be called a professional as any tradesman, doctor or lawyer. We are out there to make a dollar like every other person in this country. We also have children growing up and would like to pass’ on our profession to them. With that thought in mind, we like to look after the forests in the best possible way, to generate future growth and stability. I would like to point out to people the surroundings they live in and take a look how many products the forest industry provides for them. We all like to live in nice homes and use com- fortable furniture. We like to read books and newspapers. Then, once or twice a year, we come down with the flu and appreciate a tissue to use. The list goes on. I think our world would be a pretty drab place to live in if all things we used were made of non-biodegradable plastic. I wish people would wake up and stop believing everything they read and hear that’s negative about the forest industry.
