Ata Wednesday communi- ty meeting, ICBC Community Programs Manager Jan Wise outlined her company’s cur- rent strategy. “The focus of our spring CounterAttack is the whole is- sue of drinking and driving,” Wise said. “After 10 years of spring CounterAttack, it has been moved closer to graduation to ce plan patrol blitz heighten that awareness — don’t drink and drive.” Wise said that ICBC acci- dent statistics show that the young driver is over repre- sented in alcohol related acci- dents during high school grad- uation, and insists something must be done. : “During grad, police will be doing enforcement and we’re going to kids doin: spots on radio telling their peers and the general commu- nity that it’s not cool to drink and drive.” Wise said that every year traffic violators suffer needless pain and cost the government an estimated $1.5 billion. And that’s why Wise sup- ports Attorney General Colin Gabelmann’s attempt to get tough with B.C. drivers by raising fines for traffic viola- tions. Speeding tickets will rise from $75 to $100, and it will cost drivers $75 not to wear seatbelts, up from $35. “Some have treated fines like a joke in the past,” Wise said, “but this increase gives theni more creadability.” Wise also announced that ICBC and the RCMP will be conducting an anti-speeding campaign from May 13 to 19. “It’s about time to get seri- ous about driving.” FOR CONVICTION OF VANDALS OF WEST KOOTENAY POWER PROPERTY all bear in increased electrical rates and service Vandalism is a cost we interruptions.
