EDITORIAL Badge Of Remembrance Once, again this year, Castlegar - Robson Branch 170 of the Canadian Legion, is asking the people of Castlegar and District to wear a poppy for remembrance. This is an excellent appeal and one that should not be overlooked. During the year since Col. John McCraw wrote the challenging poem, “In Flanders Fields,” the poppy has taken on a peculiar significance. It has come to typify’ in many countries, the debt. which we who live owe to those who died in battle. One day in the year, the people of Canada are asked to wear a poppy to show that they remember. One day in the year they are asked to pause briefly to honor the dead. That is little enough. While remembrance of the dead of two wars is the spiritual aspect of the poppy, there is the other purpose of assisting the living, for the money raised through the funds is used for emergency cassist- ance to and to of K.R.C. contributors ‘in this district, have their poppies paid for them with the grant made annually by the K.R.C. to the Poppy Fund. There are many cases on record with the Poppy Fund where has been in_a matter of hours. At A Letter From An Old Friend I just got a letter from an old. friend, Gordon Atkinson, and for the sake of his many other friends in Castlegar, I’m going td let you peek over my shoulder as I read it — I know he won't mind. Gordon, as you'll doubtless re- member, came here from New- Castle, England and was very active in the community, espe- cially among the young: people. Three years ago he took a ballet course in Banff, got a scholar- ship enabling him to train with the Winnipeg Ballet, taught Bal- let very successfully in Dauphin, Manitoba, studied with a ballet troupe in Ottawa, worked and taught in Churchill to get funds and is now in England again on another scholarship, The letter was addressed from the Legat allet School, Lun- bridge Wells, Kent, England and starts out “Well at last I'm set- tled for a while and the atmos- phere is terrific! This is probably. the last link with the true Mari- insky Theatre” (the original Im- perial Ballet) “and is run along the same lines.” “IT am here on a scholarship and have ie room and board. He is very masculine and the classes he gives us are full of vitality and. fire that .. ; characterize the Slavic dances, He also takes us for double work, and makes up pas de deuxs (dance steps) that need a. heck of a lot of strength such as lifting females from the floor to above the head with arms stretched and without any push- off" (or sign of effort). “Children sre accepted here at the age ‘of six and receive a nor- mal schooling as well as the dance training. There are some youngsters here who at the age ‘of 12 could make some adult dancers in the Canadian com~ panys look like amateurs.” “Lunbridge Wells is a historic town situated way in the country yet handy to London for any spe- cial concerts, The Legat School is on the outskirts of the town. From my window right now I can see nothing but masses of trees with all the wonderful autumn colors in display.
