Annharte is an Anishinabe poet, teacher and activist. Born in 1942 to Saulteaux and Irish par- ents and raised in Winnipeg, her Poetry combines the rich heritage of Native traditions with the harsh reality of life on the street. She currently lives in Regina. Writer Patrick Friesen said in her poem, Being on the Moon, “Behind the anger you can here a smile, each laugh holds a sorrow. This is a poet talking between the spoken word and the page. Being on the Moon is a wonder- ful book.” Potrebenko...a writer and a feminist Submitted When Helen Potrebenko speaks, we remember the unspo ken reality; there is a ruling class. If you write withoyt any refer- ence to rich or poor, and the vast class difference that follows, then.you are not called a political writer. If you DO address those differences, you are called “political” know that she exists. But it seems as though she is called “feminist”, “socialist”, or “work- ing class” before she is called a writer. Why not just a writer? Helen purposefully chooses, (embraces) the perspective of working class women. The experience of working women is rarely recorded in history or fiction because working class women don't have time to write. I like to ask the experts how they manage their money; we can all learn from their ideas. “I still look on registered retirement savings plans as-the most useful vehicle for tax sav- ings,” said the 50 year old lawyer who specializes in income tax “I have rearranged most of my RRSP holdings into a self direct- ed plan which allows me to invest up to 18 per cent of my. holdings this year (20 per cent in 1994) in foreign investments. They have alsa donated money to Castleview Care and the Salvation Army. “We have some very tough decisions to. make,” said McCarthy. “We get hundreds of requests and we wish we~-could fill them all, but we can’t.” Over the years, both Walsh and McCarthy have kept very low profiles about their contri- bution to the community. “Is not a big deal, it’s just our way of thanking the com- munity that supports us,” McCarthy said quietly For the clubs and organiza- tions that have benefited from their donations, a big thank you!
