J 19821:J "M.)18?. ......... ... · ····· EPP- ALK ,.. I Times - Friday. Jufi, 23, The course is a real challenge. After two comparatively easy holes you come to a part of the course where you don't get a look at the pin until the fifth. Then six, seven and eight are hidden by hills and trees until you get to nine where you can get a glimpse of the flag. Straight drives are the key, if one can do that you can come in with a reasonably good score. On course. Branch No. 14 members Saturday the fellows who have earned a certain hadn't played the course amount of recognition this before were spraying the year as exactly one-third of ball around and found all those attending came themselves doing a lot of from the Rossland branch. climbing from one hillside to Those in attendance were another. Percy Cutler, Roy Fines, Another winner was Ted the only Phil and Jim Bateman, .French, George Dyson, John Mc- representative of the Nakusp Farland, Rich Watkinson branch. Ted was the. only golfer who didn't carry his andmyself. Three of us came home own clubs, his young son did with prizes. Rich was third that job for him. Ted waJked in low gross, Roy closest to off with the low gross prize the pin on the short fifth hole and the trophy that goes with and I won the hidden hole it. That trophy, incidentally, is named for a Rossland prize. Last weekend about 24 West Kootenay Legion golf addicts congregated at the beautiful little 9-hole Slocan Valley course, Valley View. The occasion was the annual zone golf tourney which is played on a different course in the area every summer. 1 I have been told the bid for the 1983 tournament will be offered by Branch No. 14 and, if it's successful, will be played on the Rossland wil llsry sportsman and avid golfer who drowned some years back, Johnny Dellow. Ted also had a drive that exceeded • yards on no. 2, but the long drive of the day was won by Trail's Al McAulay who got his on the designated fourth bole, just outdriving Rossland's Rich Watkinson. Al also added the second low gross. Ken Denis of Saimo won low net and Fred Adie outchipped Dave Love of Slocan for second. Dave was in our foursome to act as a guide around the tricky course. The only lady golfer of the day was named most honest, Kim Malcolm of Nelson getting that honor. We in the Trail-Rossland area are spoiled when it comes to spaghetti feeds. I don't think there is any other place in the known world where one could get it better p ~ The feed we had in Slocan left something to be desired when compared to what we are used to, however the camaraderie of the gathering was typical Legion and sort of made up for it Retirees day at the upper course on Tuesday was a beautiful day and we had 40 or better golfers out. Morris Sawyer and Jack Gellatly ran a honey-pot competition, eight balls were distributed and were won by Russ Broughton, Ron Gardiner, Hal Dixon, Percy Hamilton, Clyde Nyman, Bud Comba, Chuck Dabner and Jimmy Anderson. Bud COmba joined our foursome and showed us some pretty nifty shotmaking coming in with a gross 41. Bud hits a long ball and most of them stay straight and true. He carried on for another nine after we packed it in and was back by the time we got ready to leave. It's been some time since I mentioned the Rossland Labatts but this week I contacted Joe Hughes and got some information on the past couple of weeks. After a 0-0 tie against Trail July 7 the team played Nelson and won 5-1. Getting the goals in that game for Labatts were Rob Martin with three and Eddie Canzian with two. That was the Labatts' second in a row over Nelson, they defeated the Royals 3-2 in Nelson June 16. The team travelled to the East Kootenay over the past weekend for the Kimberley tournament and didn't meet with much success. The lost two tough contests to Edmonton by a 4-2 score before being edged by Cranbrook on penalty kicks. The Labatts will play Trail at Rossland and against Nelson on successive Wednesdays July 7.8 and Aug. 4. The league championship games goes on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Creston. The knockout round starts Saturday, Aug. 14 with championships to be played in Creston Aug. 21-22. -
