Jonathan Green 365-7266 DOWN ON THE FARM Familiar face Claude Vilgrain got some bad news this week when the New Jersey Devils handed him a ticket to their No. 1 farm team in Utica, N.Y. Vilgrain jojns Travis Green, Kelly Hurd, Dane Jackson, Steve Junker and Darcy Martini as locals who have been demoted from their NHL teams this year. GETA GRIP Castlegar’s Paul Cust had his hands full at last weekend's Trail Wrist Wrestling Championships. Competing in both the Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight, divisions, Cust was up against John Rossel in for both titles. Rossel prevailed, giving Cust second place in each. ONE OFA KIND Faced with the opportunity of playing without a helmet this year, only one NHL player chose to take the league up on its offer. Edmonton Oiler Bernie Nicholls is the maverick, joining veterans Craig MacTavish, Rod Langway, Brad Marsh, Doug Wilson and Randy Carlyle as the NHL's only helmetless players. LoclSPORTS Tom Kats set to tangle with the best in B.C. Jonathan Green SPORTS REPORTER Some local cats are competing in Vancouver today and tomorrow, but they aren't looking to win best of breed or best of show. Instead of a blue ribbon, they’ll be looking for a provincial title. The Castlegar Tom Kats will be in the big city, going toe-to-toe with the best in B.C. at the provincial flag football championships. Although he doesn’t know an awful lot about the competition, Tom Kat Tom Campbell said the team is prepared for anybody or anything. said. “All of the Tom Campbell “We’re as ready as we're going to be,” he guys have been working lots so they can get the weekend off.” Sitting second in the Trail Flag Football League, the Kats have picked a good time to play some of their best football, reeling off three ... straight wins. Scoring when they needed to and building a brick wall on defence, the Kats knocked off the league-leading Trail Bulldogs last weekend 24-8. The week before, they mauled the Dam Inn Mates 42-6, then hung on to beat the Trail Hawks 14-12. Campbell said apart from a couple of snoozer losses earlier in the season, the Kats would be sitting where the Bulldogs are now. “We've had two poor games, so we could just as easily be the top team,” he said. With their first action set for noon today, Campbell said the Kats wouldn't be trying anything fancy when they hit the field in East Vancouver. He said they would be using the balanced attack that got them this far. “I think we’re equal on both sides of the ball,” he said. “We'll do well.” A less than dynamic campaign for Ml Jason Chaves looks back on the WKMSL season that wasn’t NEWS STAFF The West Kootenay Men's Soccer League season could best be de- scribed as an elevator that didn’t have an up button for the Dexter’s 08 . Playing their final game of the regular season last Sunday against Nelson Heritage, the Dynamos lost 6-0 in a match that pretty well summed up the entire season. With no score, Louis Machado suffered an ankle injury early on and was taken to the hospital by teammate Fernando George, leaving the Dynamos shorthanded. Seizing the opportunity, Heritage scored early and often to eliminate Dexter’s from post-season action. The Dynamos struggled to field a team from their season-opening loss to the Hi Arrow Devils (a team they had never lost to) to the sea- son-ender against Heritage. Dynamo Jason Chaves said things were going well both early and late in the season, it’s what happened in between that made the dif- ference. “It was looking good at the beginning, in the middle it started to fall apart and toward the end it started to pick up again,” he said. But by then, the Dynamos had dug themselves a hole they weren’t able to climb out of and Chaves blames it on a lack of commitment. “A lot of guys said they would play for us and ended up not show- ing up,” he said. During the league’s summer break, some discussion was made as to whether the last place Dynamos would be back when the league re- sumed play in August. But thanks to the return of some players from last season, Chaves said the team lived to play another day. “We came pretty close to packing it in and then a couple of guys from Trail who played for us last year came back,” he said. The team’s play improved as the end of the season drew nearer, and they narrowly missed defeating the Devils and league-leading Nel- son Savoy. But they did beat Nakusp, a team destined for the playoffs, in their second to last game and the Dynamos’ post-season hopes were alive. Chaves said if the turnout for the Nakusp win had been the same all year, the league standings would have taken on a different look: “If we’d had the same guys from the Nakusp game all year, we'd have done fine,” he said. “We’d have been one of the top teams.” But that didn’t happen, and now they can only sit and watch with 9“ Fruitvale as the league’s other six teams battle in the playoffs. Chaves said with the season over, it’s time to forget about soccer. “It’s too early to think about next year.” Dexter's Dynamos Mario Chaves (left) battles the Hi Arrow Devils Vahid Pourmokhtari for a loose ball in a season-opening 5-4 loss.
