Castlegar News —J01v 9.1989 Plans get funding Meeting By GUY BERTRAND Staff Writer Renovations at Stanley, Humphries secondary school have taken a big step from the sketch pad to the drawitig board thanks to a major capital fund approved by the Ministry of Educa School Distriet (No. 9) will receive funds totalling $384,593, Education Minister Tony Brummet and Nelson-Creston MLA Howard Dirks announced ina press release The allocation will be used to plan the renovation of SHSS. John Dascher, secretary treasurer of School District No. 9, said the money is the fir st phase of a $5- to $6-million face-lift the school will receive. “Those funds will go to architect fees, consultant fees, engineers and so on,” said Dascher, He said the next step is to have the work drawings com. pleted for approval by the ministry “We're approaching the ministry right now with sketches for their ap proval.”’ Dascher said the fenovations at SHSS will include major upgrading of flammable materials. The ceilings and walls of the 38-year-old high school are scheduled to be redone with fire retardant materials. There are also plans for internal changes. Larger rooms for classes and storage, and provisions for an elevator fogdisabled students and visitors are in the planning stages. Dascher said the approval of initial funding is a good sign. “We're quite hopeful now that the government has committed some fin ding the actual funding will go through."* 3 If the ‘plans are approved, the earliest construction would start is June of 1990, Dascher said Brummet said in the press release that the government is meeting the commitment it made earlier in the ygar to more than double its sending on school capital programs. Society in need despite added government funds By CasNews Staff The Women in Need Society in Trail has received a Victim Assistance Program grant of $2,500 but more is still needed, according to society ad ministrator Mary Hamann Howard Dirks, Minister of State for Kootenay, presented the grant on behalf of Attorney-General Bud Smith In a press release Smith said, “The supplemental grant is being awarded to help this valuable victim assistance agency meet the needs of a growing number of sexual assault and family violence victims seeking help." The Women in Need Society has operated the Thansition House in Trail since 1980.
