BS CASTLEGAR NEWS, May 11, 1983 Robson WI celebrates. 70th year — Robson recently hosted the West Kootenay District Women's Institute confer- ence as 60 women from In- stitutes in Slocan, New Den- ver, Kinnaird, Nelson, Har- rop, Salmo, Fruitvale, Sun- shine Valley and Kamloops joined in celebrating the Robson Institute's 70th anni- versary. | Robson women attended in old-fashioned dress and one of the highlights of the event was the singing of old popu- lar songs. On Peball of the com- munity, Bill Waldie, whose late wife was a W.I. member, welcomed the members and visitors and gave a brief his- | tory of the W.I. As well, special guests Phyllis Jolly, Doris Skelton and Marjorie Galbraith, whose mothers were charter members of the Robson W.L., told of their early days in that community. Mrs. Skelton reminisced on her early days in Robson when she and her parents ar- rived from England to settle. Robson W.I. was present- ed with a number of cards of congratulations, two flower arrangements and -a certi- ficate from the B.C. Women’s Institute honoring Robson on CELEBRATION TIME... Taking part in recent celebrations of the | Robson’s Institute's 70th Anniversary were: (from left) Evelyn Leckett of F le, Margaret Th themselves with their Cana- dian counterparts, B.C. In- stitutes will be twinned with those of Newfoundland for the next two years. Delegates reports were presented which showed that _ the Institute membership is growing. Many interested convenor réports from inter- national affairs to home econ- omics and culture were also presented. The conference also saw the foll 1g slate of officers its 70th Doreen Haughton of Kam: loops represented the pro- vincial Women’s Institute and was guest speaker. The presentations of flow- ers were made by the Fruit- vale and Kinnaird Branches and a guest book was given by district president June Bell on behalf of the district board. Gwen Robinson of Fruitvale gave the Robson branch a placemat she had received at her first con- ference in Robson 10 years ago. And Barbara Robertson of Selkirk College, the recipient of the district bursary, read a letter of thanks. In her speech, Provincial Director Haughton spoke on the Provincial Emergency Program and encouraged the district to take part. She also praised the SCOPE program which helps organize new In- stitutes and rejuvenates fal- tering branches. ~* Mrs. Haughton is the mu- sical director for the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Conference, to be held this June at UBC where be- tween 1,800 and 2,200 women from over 60 different coun- tries will join together to promote international good- will, friendship and under- standing among women of the world. The B.C. Women's Insti- tute will celebrate its 75th anniversary in June, 1984.
