These few negative phrases are anemic when compared to the destructive force of many a conver- sation that graces the halls of our hallowed homes. We mold, shape, create and dramatically alter the quality of life of those around us by the constant flow of what we call “words.” Some are blurted out in fits of rage. Others are cold and calculated. Many are shrouded in the guise of being honest while others are justified by our so- called right and need to ‘‘vent.”” “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me.’" Cute little phrase — too bad it’s false! Our words have the power to create life and the power to bring about death. If we were to evaluate our conversation in light of life or death, how would we measure us? I read an article by a child psychologist in which he was com- paring negative and positive commen- ts to a set of balances. His conclusion was that for every negative that is spoken to a child, we need to speak seven positives just to bring them back to level. It’s time to tip the scales back the other way. I find it en- couraging that the Bible indicates that our conversation is to bless rather than curse. “To bless’? sounds liturgical, religious, or just down right churchy, but what is actually meant is that we are to speak well of, to make happy and to uplift. “*To curse’’ conjures images of the paint peeling off the wall, when what is really meant is to put down, to criticize and to accuse. With God’s help, let your conver- sation be a blessing rather than a cur- sing and watch life blossom before your eyes. Witnesses assemble next weekend Jehovah’s Witnesses in the West Kootenay are making preparations for their fall Circuit Assembly which is to be held Sept. 29 and 30 in Trail at the Cominco Gym. The scriptural theme of the Program is Stay Awake and Keep Your Senses, taken from the Bible. Program highlights will includew a four-part symposium designed to help people ‘‘keep our senses in all things,”’ the Witnesses say in a news release Throughout the two-day assembly, young people will have their attention drawn to practical counsel contained in the publication Questions Young People Ask — Answers That Work. As usual, arrangements are being made for a baptism ceremony on Saturday so that new witnesses can symbolize their dedication to Jehovah God by total immersion in water, the Witnesses say. On Sunday morning, lessons will be driven home by a series of skits and demonstrations on stage showing how people can all benefit from adver- sities, including their own mistakes. The climax of the convention program will begin at 1:30 p.m. Sun- Please recycle The NEWS day with music and then the key public address, Acting Wisely in a Senseless World, will be delivered by Robert Alton, district supervisor. Jehovah's Witnesses believe all will derive benefit and encouragement from the material prepared for the convention program. All Jehovah’s Witnesses and interested people are invited to the convention.
