He said in March 1990 he
would not seek re-election, but
during the July 18-20 Social
Credit leadership convention,
he said he might reconsider.

Huberts supported runner-
up Grace McCarthy in the lead-
ership race, but said her loss to
Johnston wasn't the deciding
factor in Thursday's announce-
ment.

He conceded that after
knocking on 100 doors in his
riding, most voters told him
McCarthy would have been the
best choice for party leader and
that was a factor in his weigh-
ing whether to run again.

He said he made his decision
shortly after a camping trip to
Oregon.

“I looked at my 10-year-old
Sean and 13-year-old Jason and
decided I'm not going to run,”
he said.
