David Renwick, 40, has een turning them out from his “home near Sheffield for the’ st 13 years. He has made over 100 for eager customers in Hong Kong, cthe United States, Australia, and other countries. These are snot modern take-offs in plastic tof the Middle Ages relics, but 3the real thing—hand-forged in ‘best quality iron. “. Renwick’s wife Rosemary, “who sometimes lends a hand in the forge, says they have made . tfive belts this year, two of * whieh went to the U. “, The iron contraptions ‘weigh nearly five pounds each, :fit around the waist and be- : tween the legs and are locked at the front with a padlock. Each belt takes at least eight hours to complete and is made strictly to the customer's : specifications for about $80. The chastity belt was ori- ginally designed to prevent ‘wives from being unfaithful when their husbands left to ‘fight in the Crusades in the Holy Land in the 12th and 13th zeenturies, : Community TV COMMUNITY ACCESS CH-10 Schedule for Tonight * £:5:30— re day weather re- 5:40—Planning for Retirement art 4. :;6:10—3ist Annual Union of : Youth Festival - Part 10, 70~ Castlegar City Council meeting of Oct. 24. 8:10—Lucky Goose Band, sing- ing at Selkirk College - Program includes their new hit single, “Save the Kootenays.” 9:10—Full Gospel Business- men’s Banquet held in Castlegar, Oct. 11. 11:00—Sign-off. The demand nowadays seems to be more from collec- tors of curios and antiques than jealous husbands off to the wars. Renwick's belts are com- pletely authentic reproduc- tions, based on a 13th-century model. He began the project al- most as a joke. In 1965, he set up shop to revive the long-dead art of forging iron by hand, making weather vanes, gates, door knockers and other ornamental items. One day he told his agent, who was leaving to seek orders in the United States: “Tell them we can make anything— even chastity belts.” Toeveryone’s surprise, the agent came back with an‘order, and then inquiries came flood- ing in—from Europe, Seandi- navia and the Far East. There was even one order from Italy for 150 belts; but this was more than the tiny operation could handle. Since the boom of the early 1970s, the Renwicks have re- duced production. David now works for a local engineering firm and has time for his iron- work only as a sideline. The interest is still there, he says, but he can only manage to take on about a dozen orders a year. Rosemary says the belts are reasonably comfortable to wear when one is standing up. But ina sitting position there is pressure on various strategic points—and she should know, having been her husband's patient model in the early days of design, For those customers who actually want to put the belts on their women, the Renwicks supply two keys. As for the ticklish question of what to do if both these get lost, Rosemary has a ready answer, “Use a hacksaw—but carefully.” Just when you thought it was sale to go back in the water.
