ca _CastlégarNews — morch20. 1985 BUSINESS ROGER HAMEL TAKES OVER ‘GRINDING JOB’ By KEN SMITH TORONTO (CP) — Seven months ago, Roger Hamel figured he had it made. He had just retired as a senior executive with Imperial Oil Ltd. and returned to his home town of Ottawa to set up a business consulting firm. He had arranged his life so he would have lots of time to devote to what he calls his passion,.. skiing. Then, unexpectedly, Sam Hughes resigned as president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, the voice of Canadian business and arguably the most important lobby in the country. Hamel, 56, was the unanimous choice of the chamber’s board to succeed Hughes. It's a grinding job, as Hamel knew from, his 15 years’ association with the organization. So why did he take it? SPECIAL PROFILE “T'm not really sure,” he grins. “But I know there’s no other job out there that would have attracted me.” He takes over on Saturday, March 30. “It was supposed to be Monday, April 1. But who wants to start on something like this on April Fool's Day?” In fact Hamel, an engineer by profession who joined Imperial in 1954, was only a year and a bit from being a high-profile figure within the chamber. He had been second vice-chairman, slated to be elected chairman late next year. The chairman, however, serves only for one year as a part-time spokesman, while the president finds himself putting in 12 or more hours a day looking after the needs of 165,000 members, ranging from a corner-store operator to a major manufacturing company. ECONOMIC FUTURE How does he see Canada’s economy today? There's no one-word answer, he says. “On the plus side, Canada has great potential: it has the resources, the manufacturing and the people. “On the other hand, we've got 11-per-cent unemploy. ment, high interest rates and — I don’t know — a general feeling, I guess, of uncertainty.” The federal government is moving along the path that should be expected, Hamel says. “The people voted for a change of style and they're getting it. They asked for consultation, and they're getting it.” Consultation, he says, is great. But there comes a time when action is needed. “We're all looking to the next budget to see what the government is going to do,” he says. “Then we'll see how serious Ottawa is about getting back to fiscal responsibility.” He adds that “it’s going to take time to show results in things like tackling and deficit, but what Canadians need is a firm sense of direction” and “firm leadership people can believe in.” That's part of the role of the chamber, he says. “T’ve no argument with being called a lobby, in the best sense. We try to disseminate information. MPs, and provineial governments, need to get the views of all kinds of people. “Sure, we talk for business, but unions are in government halls too, so the people passing the laws should be entitled to getting as many views as possible. That's what we're trying to do.” Hamel is married, with three children. When he can't ski, he likes to plan tennis, or build model ships. “It's nice, he explains, “to fit all the pieces together and see what comes out.” = SPRING CLEAN-UP . . . Cashews Photo Deliveries By DARRYL GIBSON TOKYO (CP) — Although sailors and pilots have long used the parabolic radio navigation system called loran C to guide their vessels and aircraft, it has generally been denied the land-based navigator. But no longer. Japan's Nissan Motor Co. has designed a system using loran C to guide Japanese delivery vans through the often mystifying maze of unnamed streets and roads in the country’s cities and towns. Loran is an acronym for long-range navigation. The system, announced in time for Japan's just-started Expo 85 science and technology exhibition in Tsukuba outside Tokyo, combines a new loran receiver with a computer-based floppy dise system and video display terminal to locate not only the driver's’ position, but also determine the most effective routing for multiple deliveries. To operate the system, a host computer in a warehouse is fed customer addresses and information on special needs as well as a host of maps and other co-ordinates. DETERMINES ROUTES The computer then determines the best routes and sequence for deliveries and the new program is written on a floppy disc, which is later inserted into a dise drive mounted in the delivery truck. On the diplay unit, the maps of the areas and the loran-determined position of the delivery van are then displayed for the driver's use. a light pen hed to the video unit can be used to make notes and check off deliveries and an input OPEN MONDAYS YES Open 6 Days a Week Monday to Saturday To Serve You Better 9: go hi-tech unit will allow the driver to do all his bi making automatically. By figuring the time lag between receiving the three signals the computer can pinpoint the truck's location. GROWTH INDUSTRY A future model plans to use satellite-transmitted Global Positioning System signals, Nissan said. Although the system is only experimental at the moment, it should find wide use in Japan's twisting, often illogical road and street system because parcel delivery has become one of the country's biggest growth industries in recent years. The big five Takuhaibin delivery companies alone dropped off more than 2.1 million packages in 1983 and the trucking industry as a whole expects to deliver 400 million pieces of small freight in 1985. A system which will keep the van drivers from spending hours trying to find a single address will surely be snapped up by the big companies which average route networks up to 20,000 kilometres each. And with the biggest companies having 20,000 and more allied trucks apiece, the number possibly requiring a delivery navigation system should encourage Nissan into the production stage soon. A prototype is already operating the aréa around the Expo site in conjunction with the giant Seibu department store chain.
