Dy. as News November 30, 1988 MEDICINE 16 OF 24 PATIENTS RECOVER Hormone-like drug appears to cure hepatitis TORONTO (CP), — A drug that mimics a hormone-like substance produced naturally in the body ap pears to have cured some people dying of hepatitis, says a researcher from the University of Toronto. Sixteen of 24 patients With “ful minant hepatitis” who were treated with a synthetic form of prostag: landin F have recovered, says. Dr. Gary Levy, a liver specialist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. “They're cured and are now on no drugs whatsoever and are back at work.” The other eight improved but had liver transplants because of damage left by the disease, said Levy, who spoke recently at an international liver conference in Toronto. One of the eight died after the transplant. Although it is too early,to draw specific conclusions from the small, preliminary study, Levy said the re search is promising and has sparked a number of larger human trials in Canada and the United States. Ordinarily, patients with fulminant hepatitis have a less than 20-per-cent survival rate. Up to 3,000 Canadians die each year from the disease. But Leukemia gene found TORONTO (CP) — A University of Toronto geneticist has discovered a defective gene that causes a form of childhood leukemia. Dr. Ian Dube led a team of researchers who found the chromo. some containing the gene which causes acute lymphoblastic leukemia. They also located where on the chromosome the gene is located. This form of leukemia, called ALL, accounts for about 10 per cent of all leukemias, researchers say. It affects the body's immune system through T-cells, found in bone marrow, which produce disease-fighting antibodies “We expect to use these findings to learn how the leukemia cells arise,” said Dube, “and how the cancerous cells differ in function from the normal cell.” Dube began researching the ALL gene in 1984 Genes are units of DNA, the molecule of the heredity found in every cell. There are between 50,000 to 100,000 genes in each human cell. “Cancer is a genetic disease of the cell,” he said. “Defects that trigger cancerous growth are passed on to the next generations of that cell.” Genes regulate the cell growth and scientists now believe cancer-causing genes called oncogenes arise from normal genes A cancer-causing event — such as long-term smoking — changes heal thy proto-oncogene into a cancerous oncogene, thus spreading cancer as cell growth occurs. Dube said his group's research supports the oncogene theory of cancer because the gene found in the leukemia cells they studied has been identified as a oncogene. The gene found in leukemia cells in mice and humans. was one of more than 40 oncogenes that have been identified, he said “Our work has only just begun because now we want to use our man-made gene probes to identify the actual structure of the oncogene and its normal precursor.” pO 00000000000 0% LYNN ANDERSON Wednesday, Thursday & Friday December 28, 29, 30 DINNER SHOW and ROOM for 2 at the Sheraton with one of the top country/pop female Dinner, Show & Room tor 2: f $112 US/$135 at par “= & 4332S ooo NEW YEAR’S EVE SAT., DECEMBER 31 n the New Year ner dancir TITITILILI Tl the single death in Levy's study translates into a survival rate of better than 90 per cent. PATIENTS CRITICAL The patients in the study suffered from one of three forms of hepatitis that had progressed to a life-threat: ening stage. Some came under Levy's care afte lapsing into comas. There are many forms of hepatitis — or inflammation of the liver — most of them caused by viruses. Hepatitis B, which strikes an es timated 200,000 North Americans each year, can cause mild flu-like symptoms or serious liver damage that gives sufferers the yellow skinned appearance of jaundice. Up to 10 per cent of people with hepatitis B become carriers, able to infect others through sexual inter. course or the exchange of blood. Blood donations in Canada are screened for hepatitis B and the disease can be prevented by a vaccine. But a high percentage of carriers go on to develop potentially fatal liver cancer or cirrhosis of the liver. Hepatitis A, also known as infec- tious hepatitis, spreads from person to person by casual contact or through contaminated food and water \supplies. It causes fever, nausea and jaundice. No vaccine has been developed. NOT DETECTED A third form of the disease, Non A-Non B hepatitis, is caused by sev eral unidentified viruses, Levy said. About one-third of those infected contract it through blood donations, for which no foolproof screening pro- cess has been found. Levy stressed much larger and carefully controlled studies of pros taglandin F are needed before it could be approved for widespread clinical use. One of the studies he is heading, which he began last month and will be conducted at several Canadian hospitals, involves treating 30 pati. ents with prostaglandin F and 30 with a placebo. However, there are ethical con- cerns because of the high fatality rate associated with the disease, Levy said. “Most of these patients are in the ICU, often on respirators, on the brink of death. “One of my fellows (physicians) will be with the patient all the time,” he said. “If there is any deterioration in the condition” the doctor will im mediately begin prostaglandin treat: ment and the patient will be placed on a waiting list for a liver trans. plant.
