time indoors during the
colder winter months, expo-
sure to indoor air contami-
nants increases.

Environmental problems
are often thought of as exist-
ing almost exclusively out-
doors, but in reality, it is the
indoors where we are the
most vulnerable.

The tighter construction of
newer homes can lead to a
build-up of indoor pollutants
especially when windows
and doors are kept shut and
there is insufficient ventila-
tion. Poor air quality can
produce symptoms such as
coughing, burning eyes or
nose, headaches, dizziness,
nausea, nose bleeds, fatigue,
dry skin, rashes and general

allergic reactions. People
with chronic health problems
are especially vulnerable.

There are may sources of
contaminants but the preven-
tative measures are simple.
Here are four areas to con-
sider at this time of year.

1. Fumace filters: Be sure
to check your filter often and
replace it regularly. Newer
activated carbon or chemical
absorbent filters actually
help remove gases but are
more expensive. Interesting-
ly enough, the unassuming
spider plant can also help
clean in-door air. It’s been
found that the plant absorbs
a certain amount of
formaldehyde gas during the
photosynthesis process.

2. Firewood: Dry it outside

quantities you require. Fire-
wood left drying inside loads
the house with moisture and
creates a breeding ground for
mould as well as insects and
small rodents.

3. Cleaning and painting
products: It’s hard to believe
but over 60,000 commercial
chemicals in use today were
unknown 40 years ago. If the
fumes from household clean-
ers and solvents in paints are
strong enough, they can
affect the central nervous
system. Provide extra venti-
lation not only when using
these products but for a peri-
od afterwards to dilute any
lingering gases.

4. Daily activities: Even
our personal habits can

have a major impact on the
quality of air within the
home. Cooking for exam-
ple, can generate moisture
and odours. It can also pro-
duce airborne grease and
other hydrocarbons which
can permeate the entire
house. Make sure your
kitchen is well ventilated
and thoroughly clean coun-
tertops when finished.
Long, hot showers load the
air with moisture too. But
perhaps the most dangerous
activity is smoking. Over
2,000 chemicals have now
been identified with
cigarette smoke.

Treated wood safe for the environment says expert

It used to be that if you
asked someone from another
country to describe Canada,
chances were good they’d paint
a picture of a wonderfully large
country full of clean, running
water and ingly endl

trees naturally lasts longer
than others, all wood eventu-
ally succumbs to the elements
and living enemies. Insects,
fungi and millions of micro-
organisms feed and live on the
wood it to decay and

miles of trees.

But nowadays we know that
there aren’t “endless miles of
trees”. Everything has its limits,
including forests.

While it’s true that here in
Canada we have been blessed
with an abundance of this natu-
ral heritage, that.doesn’t mean
we can squander-it. Every tree
counts - it’s that simple.

“One of the best ways to
help conserve Canadian
forests is to simply extend the
service life of the wood we
use,” explains Henry Walthert,
Executive Director of the
Canadian Institute of Treated
Wood (CITW). “Making sure
that the wood we use stays
strong and last as long as pos-
sible will help reduce the num-
ber of trees we cut down.”

Choosing pressure treated
wood for outdoor building
projects will help achieve that
goal. According to Walthert,
pressure treating carefully
selected wood “last up to four
times longer than untreated
wood.” That simple process
can save hundreds of thou-
sands of trees from being cut
every years as well as the
money and energy needed for
routine maintenance tasks.

While it’s true that the
wood from some species of

water is especially susceptible
to these conditions. But the
process of pressure treating
wood helps protect it from
these destructive elements
The treatment process
involves forcing stable preser-
vatives deep into the wood cells
where they react with wood
sugars to form insoluble precip-
itates. The precipitates, which
are highly resistant to leaching,
remain fixed in the wood to
ensure its structural integrity.
Equally important is the fact

that the treating process
doesn’t alter the wood’s essen-
tial characteristics - it contin-
ues to look and feel good for
decades. Treated wood won’t
shrink, swell, split or warp any
more than untreated wood. It
simply is more durable and
lasts longer.

To a homeowner planning a
home improvement project,
the benefits are considerable
“For example,” says CITW’s
Walthert, “take an average
backyard deck. That might call
for two or three trees to begin
with, but you'll probably need
to replace all or part of your
deck every few years if you’re
working with untreated lum-
ber. On the other hand, if
you're using pressure treated
wood to build the deck, it
could last up to 50 years.”
