The local unit has been busy in the last few months. In March, the second Cancer Aware- ness Night was held at the Legion Hall and was well attended. This was held in conjunction with the first visit to Castlegar of the Mobile Mammography Screening Van. The van’s visit was extremely successful, all appointments being booked well in advance. The van will again visit Castlegar on August 8 to 11 in the hospital parking lot. Any woman 40 years and older, with no his- tory of breast cancer, may book an appointment by phoning 1-800-663-9203 (only a few ap- pointments left). Avery successful daffodil sale was held this year raising funds of $2,552. This was due to the hard work of two dedicated volunteers and the generosity of local businesses, organiza- tions and the general public. get this year, probably due to the general eco- nomic situation. However, 66 canvassers did a great job of meeting the public and distributing information about the advances in cancer treat- ments. As in other years, the Unit was an active participants in the Selkirk Lions Trade Fair, al- so in April. ; Some concern was voiced at the meeting that cancer patients in Castlegar and area still do not realize that emotional support and fi- nancial aid are available for the asking. This service is provided by well-trained volunteers. Telephone ‘numbers of those volunteers are available at the local medical clinics and the hospital. No person need feel alone when deal- ing with cancer. The Canadian Cancer Society will run an- other Lifestyles Lottery this year between Sep- tember 1992 and January 1993. Mount Sentinel begins their ceremonies with what I felt was a most appropriate tradi- tion. As the graduating stu- dents process down the aisle each bears a candle which — when they reach the front of the auditorium — they hand over to a friend or sibling in a lower grade. This passing on. of light from one generation to anoth- er, year after;year, is symbol- ic of the passing on of knowl- edge and truth. I hope that all those stu- dents who participated both in the giving and receiving of light really felt. the signifi- Pulpit Pew Grace Presbyterian Church Rev. Murray GARVIN cance of what they were do- ing. In the Christian faith, God is seen as the source of light, and all it represents. The cre- ation story in Genesis 1 tells that “. . . the earth was form- less and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep . . . Then God’s first creative decree was ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Light in the midst of dark- ness. Yet the darkness was still there. The Old Testament is the story of many people who tried to live in that light, and of others who failed to do so and lived in darkness. Into this situation came Jesus Christ, saying “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Countless Christians have found this to be true. Yet today many are search- ing for light in their lives, for truth, for meaning and pur- pose in life. They search in many very interesting places, philosphies and practices. And all the time our Cre- ator says: “I have given you the Light. Come to Him, walk in Him.” To any who are seeking light, meaning or purpose in life, the Churches of Castle- gar, I extend God’s invitation to “walk in the light” of Jesus Christ, the “light of the world.” Selkirk offering new 11-month legal assistant program in ’92 An emergent need in the le- gal profession is being met by certified legal assistants, a rel- atively new profession that has witnessed enormous growth in the past few years.
